SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Jack A. Henderson of Gurnee, who passed away on April 11, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Jack Henderson was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin on March 28, 1930; he attended high school in Kenosha and graduated from Waukegan Township High School; in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served loyally in combat operations for four years while aboard the USS Blue and the USS Juneau; in 1953, while serving in the Korean War, he was baptized into the Roman Catholic faith; he married Marion Deinlein at St. Mary in Fremont Center on November 20, 1954; and

WHEREAS, After returning from the war, Jack Henderson began his career as a firefighter in Highland Park; he rose to the rank of lieutenant at the North Chicago Fire Department; he served as fire chief at Abbott Lab; inspired by his father, who was also a firefighter, he inspired his two sons and a grandson to become firefighters and paramedics; and

WHEREAS, Jack Henderson enjoyed traveling and visited the Far East, the Middle East, and various places in Europe; he traveled to the Lakewoods Resort in Cable, Wisconsin every summer to vacation with his family; he would tell stories around the campfire, teach his grandchildren how to drive on the backroads around the resort, and take his grandchildren on "bear excursions"; he loved his grandchildren, and they called him "Grampa Apple"; he began playing golf at age 52 and routinely played five days a week; he remained close with his military comrades and enjoyed the annual USS Juneau reunions with his shipmates; in 2018, he participated in a Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. and was accompanied by his grandson, Ryan; they had the privilege and honor of visiting the Korean War Memorial; affectionately known as "Apple Jack", he will be remembered for his sense of humor, compassion, and smile; and

WHEREAS, Jack Henderson is survived by his wife, Marion; his children, Doug (Jill) Henderson, Greg (Jane) Henderson, Jeff (Beth) Henderson, and Tina (Mike) Burke; his grandchildren, Sarah and Brian Henderson, Paul (Danielle) and Jeff Henderson, Chris, Michael, and Liza Henderson, and Ryan, Katie, and Jack Burke; and his great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Vivian Henderson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Jack A. Henderson and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Jack Henderson as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
