2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Vernon J. "Vern" Lukowicz on July 23, |
4 | | 2018 at the age of 91; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz was born on March 15, 1927 and |
6 | | raised in Chicago; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, In 1944, Vern Lukowicz enlisted in the U.S. Navy |
8 | | during his senior year of high school; he was only 17 and |
9 | | worked out an agreement between the government and the school |
10 | | to receive his diploma; he then went to boot camp in California |
11 | | and was assigned to an LSM-145, an amphibious landing ship with |
12 | | a crew of 62 seamen; the ship sailed off to Wake Island, |
13 | | Saipan, Guam, and Marcus Island; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz and his fellow shipmates delivered |
15 | | aviation fuel and supplies for troop support and, at times, |
16 | | were sent out on armed clean up patrols; he was stationed in |
17 | | the Pacific Islands for a year; he returned to the United |
18 | | States and was assigned to a yard oiler ship that served the |
19 | | naval base on Catalina Island, California; he was an |
20 | | Electricians Mate Third Class Petty Officer and was discharged |
21 | | in 1946 through the Great Lakes Naval Station; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz and his wife, Lynn, eventually |
2 | | settled in Leyden Township in 1961 and raised their family; and |
3 | | WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz stayed involved in his community |
4 | | after the war and served as Northlake Fire Department |
5 | | Commissioner; he was a longtime member and former Grand Knight |
6 | | of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of St. John |
7 | | Vianney Church; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz was honored in 2012 when he was |
9 | | brought on a one-day all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C., |
10 | | along with 94 World War II veterans from the Chicago area |
11 | | through a non-for-profit organization called "Honor Flight |
12 | | Chicago"; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz is survived by his beloved wife, |
14 | | Marilyn "Lynn" Lukowicz; his children, Thomas J. (Jane) |
15 | | Lukowicz, Debra A. (Duain) Tischer, and Carole (Edwin) Brooks; |
16 | | his grandchildren, Kimberly (Mike) Nordvall, Marty Tischer, |
17 | | Daniel Brooks, and Mary Kate Brooks; and his |
18 | | great-grandchildren, Jacque, Allison, and Lauren Nordvall; |
19 | | therefore, be it

21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
22 | | Vernon J. "Vern" Lukowicz and extend our sincere condolences to |
