SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Vernon J. "Vern" Lukowicz on July 23,
42018 at the age of 91; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz was born on March 15, 1927 and
6raised in Chicago; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In 1944, Vern Lukowicz enlisted in the U.S. Navy
8during his senior year of high school; he was only 17 and
9worked out an agreement between the government and the school
10to receive his diploma; he then went to boot camp in California
11and was assigned to an LSM-145, an amphibious landing ship with
12a crew of 62 seamen; the ship sailed off to Wake Island,
13Saipan, Guam, and Marcus Island; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz and his fellow shipmates delivered
15aviation fuel and supplies for troop support and, at times,
16were sent out on armed clean up patrols; he was stationed in
17the Pacific Islands for a year; he returned to the United
18States and was assigned to a yard oiler ship that served the
19naval base on Catalina Island, California; he was an
20Electricians Mate Third Class Petty Officer and was discharged
21in 1946 through the Great Lakes Naval Station; and

1    WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz and his wife, Lynn, eventually
2settled in Leyden Township in 1961 and raised their family; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz stayed involved in his community
4after the war and served as Northlake Fire Department
5Commissioner; he was a longtime member and former Grand Knight
6of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of St. John
7Vianney Church; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz was honored in 2012 when he was
9brought on a one-day all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C.,
10along with 94 World War II veterans from the Chicago area
11through a non-for-profit organization called "Honor Flight
12Chicago"; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Vern Lukowicz is survived by his beloved wife,
14Marilyn "Lynn" Lukowicz; his children, Thomas J. (Jane)
15Lukowicz, Debra A. (Duain) Tischer, and Carole (Edwin) Brooks;
16his grandchildren, Kimberly (Mike) Nordvall, Marty Tischer,
17Daniel Brooks, and Mary Kate Brooks; and his
18great-grandchildren, Jacque, Allison, and Lauren Nordvall;
19therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Vernon J. "Vern" Lukowicz and extend our sincere condolences to

3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Vern Lukowicz as an expression of
