| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Julius W. Hegeler II of Danville, who |
| 4 | | passed away on July 5, 2019; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II was born in Danville to Madelle |
| 6 | | and Edward C. Hegeler II on May 9, 1928; he graduated from |
| 7 | | Danville High School in 1946; after attending the University of |
| 8 | | Illinois and serving in the Army National Guard for three |
| 9 | | years, he earned a business degree from Millikin University in |
| 10 | | 1950; he then enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he |
| 11 | | was a decorated fighter pilot and flew 70 missions in the |
| 12 | | Korean War as a first lieutenant; he married Bobette Steely in |
| 13 | | 1956; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II returned to Danville in 1955 |
| 15 | | and, along with his brother Edward and partners Harry and |
| 16 | | Robert Peterson, built what would become Peterson-Puritan |
| 17 | | Inc., a chemical packaging company and one of Vermilion |
| 18 | | County's largest employers; the company was sold to Corn |
| 19 | | Products Co. in 1966, but he remained a vice president until |
| 20 | | his retirement in 1978; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II loved his community and always |
| 22 | | strived to make it a better place for all who lived there; in |
|

| 1 | | the latter part of his life, he donated millions to local |
| 2 | | entities and projects; most of his philanthropic efforts |
| 3 | | focused on education, the environment, health care, historic |
| 4 | | preservation, the arts, and helping people with disabilities; |
| 5 | | his generosity benefited numerous organizations, including the |
| 6 | | Danville Public Schools, OSF Healthcare Sacred Heart Medical |
| 7 | | Center, the Danville AMBUCS, the Vermilion County Conservation |
| 8 | | District, the Danville Family YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of |
| 9 | | Danville, the Danville Area Community College Foundation, |
| 10 | | WorkSource Enterprises, the Danville Public Library |
| 11 | | Foundation, the United Way of Danville Area, the Laura Lee |
| 12 | | Fellowship House, the Vermilion County War Museum, and the |
| 13 | | Vermilion County Airport Authority; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II was preceded in death by his |
| 15 | | parents; his wife, Bobette; his sister, Madelle Semerjian; and |
| 16 | | his brother, Edward Hegeler; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II is survived by his daughters, |
| 18 | | Alix Hegeler and Madelle Hegeler; and his son, Harlin Steely |
| 19 | | Hegeler; therefore, be it
|
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
| 21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 22 | | Julius W. Hegeler II and extend our sincere condolences to his |
| 23 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
