2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Ralph Louis Langenheim Jr. of Urbana, who |
4 | | passed away on August 3, 2019; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio |
6 | | to Ralph Louis and Myrtle (Helmers) Langenheim on May 26, 1922; |
7 | | he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Tulsa |
8 | | in 1943, his master's degree from the University of Colorado in |
9 | | 1947, and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in |
10 | | 1951; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. served as an officer in the |
12 | | United States Navy during World War II; after training at the |
13 | | U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, he participated in |
14 | | the D-Day landings; he retired from the Navy Reserve as a |
15 | | lieutenant commander; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. began his career in education |
17 | | as an assistant professor at Coe College in Iowa; he then |
18 | | served as an assistant professor of paleontology at the |
19 | | University of California, Berkeley; he then accepted a position |
20 | | as professor of geology at the University of Illinois at |
21 | | Urbana-Champaign; there, he was named professor emeritus in |
22 | | 1993; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. worked with the Instituto |
2 | | Gelologico Nacional de Colombia, the Geological Survey of |
3 | | Canada, the Geological Survey of Iran, the Geological Survey of |
4 | | the Republic of China, and the Polytechnic University of |
5 | | Albania; he served as a distinguished visiting professor at the |
6 | | University of Nevada, Las Vegas and as the book review editor |
7 | | of Geological Education; he received the Rudolph Eric Raspe |
8 | | Medal from the Institute Geometaphysik Neuschwanstein; he was |
9 | | the curator of fossil invertebrates at the National History |
10 | | Museum and a partner at Lanman Associates Consultant |
11 | | Geologists; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. was a member of many |
13 | | professional organizations, including the American Association |
14 | | for the Advancement of Science, the Paleontological Society, |
15 | | the Geological Society of America, the Society for Sedimentary |
16 | | Geology, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the |
17 | | International Association of Cnidaria Specialists, the |
18 | | Illinois Academy of Sciences, the Explorers Club, and the Rocky |
19 | | Mountain Biological Laboratory; he was also a member of the |
20 | | Naval Institute, the Rotary Club, the Exchange Club, the |
21 | | Reserve Officer Association, the National Association of the |
22 | | United States Ship Landing Craft Infantry, and Sigma Xi; and
|
23 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. served on the Champaign |

1 | | County Board from 1998 until 2014, where he was a member of the |
2 | | Environment and Land Use Committee and the Highway and |
3 | | Transportation Committee; he was the Champaign County Mahomet |
4 | | Aquifer Consortium representative and served on the |
5 | | Champaign-Urbana Urban Area Transportation System Committee |
6 | | and the Human Services Committee; he was a precinct committee |
7 | | representative in Savoy; during every Fourth of July parade, he |
8 | | happily carried the American flag at the head of the Democratic |
9 | | Party; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. is survived by his wife, Mary |
11 | | Casey Diana; his children, Victoria Langenheim and Ralph |
12 | | Langenheim; his stepchildren, Eric Steckler and Matthew Diana; |
13 | | his granddaughter, Emma Lengenheim; and his |
14 | | step-grandchildren, Logan Hodges, Eric Applequist, and Stella |
15 | | and Scarlett Steckler; therefore, be it

16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
18 | | Ralph Louis Langenheim Jr. and extend our sincere condolences |
19 | | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be |
20 | | it further

21 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
22 | | presented to the family of Ralph Langenheim Jr. as an |
23 | | expression of our esteem and respect.
