2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Harriet McLaughlin Rose of Mahomet, | ||||||
4 | formerly of Charleston, who passed away on August 5, 2019; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was born in Sparta to Harry and Nina | ||||||
6 | (Lindsay) McLaughlin on February 23, 1934; she was proud of her | ||||||
7 | Randolph County roots and was a member of the Sparta band, a | ||||||
8 | Sparta cheerleader, and a nominee for the homecoming court | ||||||
9 | during her freshman year; she moved with her family to | ||||||
10 | Fairfield to finish high school and was a member of the band, | ||||||
11 | the cheerleading captain, and the recipient of the Outstanding | ||||||
12 | 4-H Member Award for the State of Illinois, which earned her a | ||||||
13 | trip to the national 4-H convention; she was also instrumental | ||||||
14 | in creating the Fairfield water safety lifeguarding program, | ||||||
15 | which continues to be used today; she attended the University | ||||||
16 | of Illinois, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority | ||||||
17 | and the women's synchronized swimming team and, during her | ||||||
18 | freshman year, was nominated for Homecoming Queen; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose began her career in higher education | ||||||
20 | at the University of Michigan; she then worked as the assistant | ||||||
21 | to the Dean of MacMurray College; she later earned a bachelor's | ||||||
22 | degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield and a | ||||||
23 | master's degree in business administration; she began working |

1 | as an administrative director at Eastern Illinois University | ||||||
2 | and retired in 2002; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was a lifelong Republican and the | ||||||
4 | chair of the Morgan County Republic Women during the Cold War; | ||||||
5 | during this time, she traveled extensively, including a trip to | ||||||
6 | Russia as a guest of the Deputy US Ambassador to the Soviet | ||||||
7 | Union; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose developed a lifelong love for tennis | ||||||
9 | when she lived in Jacksonville and was known to drop everything | ||||||
10 | to watch a Grand Slam final; during her Charleston years, she | ||||||
11 | was a proud member of the OBS ladies club, taught business | ||||||
12 | classes as an adjunct for Lake Land College, and was a member | ||||||
13 | of the First Presbyterian Church; she was knowledgeable about | ||||||
14 | classical French antiques and had a keen eye for decorating and | ||||||
15 | fashion; she enjoyed the arts, particularly art museums and | ||||||
16 | Broadway shows; during retirement, she enjoyed attending the | ||||||
17 | University of Illinois Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's | ||||||
18 | classes on current events and writing, which inspired her to | ||||||
19 | conduct research and compose My Southern Illinois Heritage, a | ||||||
20 | memoir for her family; she attended many University of Illinois | ||||||
21 | Alumni Association and Eastern Illinois University work alumni | ||||||
22 | events; she believed that anyone could do anything they put | ||||||
23 | their mind to; she loved her grandchildren, who affectionately | ||||||
24 | called her "HaHa"; and

1 | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was preceded in death by her parents | ||||||
2 | and her sister, Nellie Wineland; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose is survived by her son, Illinois | ||||||
4 | State Senator Chapin (Camille) Rose; her grandchildren, Jack, | ||||||
5 | Annie, Kira, and Grace; her sister, Mabelle Wexler; her | ||||||
6 | brother-in-law, Gene Wineland; her nephews, Tom (Audrey) | ||||||
7 | Wineland and Tom Hirte; her niece, Stacy Given; and many other | ||||||
8 | relatives; therefore, be it
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
10 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
11 | Harriet McLaughlin Rose and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
12 | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
13 | further

14 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
15 | presented to the family of Harriet Rose as an expression of our | ||||||
16 | deepest sympathy.
