| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of George W. Black Jr. of Carbondale, who |
| 4 | | passed away on August 28, 2019; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, George Black Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York on |
| 6 | | April 1, 1930; he served in the United States Marine Corps |
| 7 | | during the Korean War; he earned a bachelor's degree from Saint |
| 8 | | Francis College in Brooklyn, New York, a master's degree in |
| 9 | | chemistry from St. John's University in New York, and a |
| 10 | | master's degree in library science from Columbia University in |
| 11 | | New York; he married Katherine Mary McKenna in Flushing, New |
| 12 | | York on March 3, 1962; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, George Black Jr. served at Southern Illinois |
| 14 | | University Carbondale as a full professor and director of the |
| 15 | | science library at Morris Library for 22 years; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, George Black Jr. volunteered and served on the |
| 17 | | board of the Carbondale Public Library; he enjoyed the beauty |
| 18 | | of Southern Illinois; he was a devoted fan of the men's and |
| 19 | | women's Saluki sports teams; during retirement, he volunteered |
| 20 | | with Habitat for Humanity; he was a loving husband, father, and |
| 21 | | grandfather; and
