SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Leland Bishop "Lee" Miller Jr. of
4Mahomet, who passed away on October 26, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lee Miller was born in Bloomington to Leland B.
6Sr. and Nellie C. (Jolly) Miller on June 17, 1931; he graduated
7salutatorian in 1949 from University High School in
8Bloomington; he received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical
9Engineering, a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, and a
10Master of Business Administration from the University of
11Illinois; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Lee Miller pursued a doctoral thesis at Purdue
13University in chemical engineering prior to accepting a
14research engineering position at Exxon in New Jersey; later, he
15taught management courses at the Harvard Graduate School of
16Business and the University of Illinois; he was a member of
17Alpha Chi Sigma, Phi Lambda Upsilon, and Sigma Chi at the
18University of Illinois; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Lee Miller served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to
201957 as a first lieutenant in the 501st Army Security Agency
21stationed in Korea and Fort Devens, Massachusetts; he continued
22in the Army Reserve until 1962; and

1    WHEREAS, In 1959, Lee Miller joined the A.E. Staley
2Manufacturing Co., later Staley Continental, as a chemical
3engineer; he then held other positions, including manager of
4sweetener manufacturing operations, director of facilities
5planning, and director of long-range planning and assistant
6treasurer, before his final position as treasurer and vice
7president; following his career with Staley, he was elected
8vice president/chief financial officer of MultiFresh Systems
9Inc.; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Lee Miller's affiliations included the National
11Association of Corporate Treasurers, the Planning Executive
12Institute, the Financial Management Association, the Midwest
13Planning Association, the American Management Association, the
14Corporate Finance Council, the American Institute of Chemical
15Engineers, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions
16Club; he held the positions of vice president of United
17Cerebral Palsy of Illinois, director of Progress Resources, and
18president of the Industrial Development Research Council; he
19was a Mahomet Village Board member and a chairman of the
20planning and zoning committee; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Lee Miller was fearless in trying new things
22regardless of his age; he learned to ski at age 50 and kept
23skiing until the age of 75; he learned to golf at age 57 and

1looked forward to the 19th hole regardless of the outcome; his
2favorite ski and golf spot was Telluride, Colorado, where he
3and his wife spent many weeks enjoying the slopes and
4surrounding mountains with family and friends; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lee Miller was an avid storyteller and enjoyed
6when someone appreciated his unique sense of humor; he was a
7voracious reader and had multiple books by his chair at all
8times; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lee Miller was a fan of the Illini and the Chicago
10Bears, since the Bears franchise was started by A.E. Staley as
11the Staley Bears; he was a Chicago Bears season ticket holder
12and attended the home games regularly up until the week prior
13to his passing; he was happiest when he was spending time with
14his wife, children, and granddaughters; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Lee Miller was preceded in death by his parents;
16his sister, Charlotte (Herb) McGrath; his son, Steven Robert
17Miller; and his niece, Kim McGrath; he was previously married
18to Elene (Schiermer) Miller; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Lee Miller is survived by his wife of 34 years,
20Alice P. Elder-Miller; his daughter, Susan (Timothy) Fallon;
21his son, James Bishop Miller; and his granddaughters, Katherine
22and Elizabeth Fallon; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Leland Bishop "Lee" Miller Jr. and extend our sincere
4condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
5him; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Lee Miller as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
