SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ozzie Mitchell of Joliet, who passed away
4on November 4, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell was born in Millry, Alabama to
6Charles and Ruth (May) Mitchell; he graduated from Koenton High
7School and attended St. Petersburg College; he settled in
8Joliet in 1969; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell retired from Caterpillar Inc. in
101999 following 30 years of dedicated service; he was also a
11former police officer in Miami, Florida; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Beginning in 1969, Ozzie Mitchell was the
13executive director of the Peter Claver Center, which provided
14tutoring, food baskets, Christmas for Tots, a food pantry,
15youth mentoring programs, job placement, and a training
16facility for inner city youth; he founded the Shorei go ju
17Martial Arts Academy and was a sensei and an international
18martial arts instructor; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell was preceded in death by his
20parents; his son, Derrick Mitchell; his sisters, Ollie Johnson
21and Dolly Myers; his brother, Charles "Bud" Mitchell; and his

1brothers-in-law, San Myers, Jimmy Johnson, and Samuel
2Washington; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell is survived by his wife of 50
4years, Peggy (Williams) Mitchell; his children, Ozzie Mitchell
5Jr., Zena Mitchell, Nicole Davis, Nancy Edmonds, and Marcus
6Mitchell; his brothers, Riley (Linda) and Jerry Mitchell; his
7sisters, Bertha Washington, Janie (Cleophus) Stephens, and
8Edith (Carl) Lyles; numerous grandchildren,
9great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and an extended
10family of friends and loved ones; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13Ozzie Mitchell and extend our sincere condolences to his
14family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
15further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Ozzie Mitchell as an expression of
18our deepest sympathy.
