SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Kenneth Eldon Andersen Ph.D. of
4Champaign, who passed away on January 26, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen was born in Iowa to Mads Ingvard
6(Edward) Andersen and Anna Christiansen Andersen; he was the
7youngest of five children; he graduated from Harlan High School
8in Harlan, Iowa in 1951; he earned his bachelor's degree and
9master's degree from Iowa State Teachers College, now the
10University of Northern Iowa; he served two years in the U.S.
11Army as an education specialist and part-time instructor for
12New Mexico State University on the White Sands Proving Ground;
13he earned his Ph.D. in communication from the University of
14Wisconsin-Madison in 1961; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen briefly served as a visiting
16professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago and the
17University of Southern California; he then taught at the
18University of Michigan-Ann Arbor; he relocated to the
19University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1970; he retired
20as professor emeritus of communication from the University of
21Illinois in 1995; he authored books on persuasion and
22introductory communication and co-authored a book of original
23essays and selected journal articles; and

1    WHEREAS, During his career, Kenneth Andersen served in a
2number of roles outside the classroom; he was a debate coach at
3Iowa State Teachers College, the University of Wisconsin, and
4the University of Michigan; at the University of Illinois, he
5served as associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts &
6Sciences, interim head of Speech Communication, interim head of
7Speech and Hearing Science, and deputy vice chancellor of
8Academic Affairs; he also served numerous roles in the
9University Senate, including three years as chair, three terms
10as a member of the University Senates' Conference, and as
11Senate parliamentarian for numerous chancellors; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen was active in a number of
13organizations and associations, such as the American
14Association of University Professors (AAUP) as a local chapter
15member and president, state conference president, treasurer,
16and newsletter editor and editorial writer; he was a chapter
17and often conference delegate to more than 30 national AAUP
18conventions, chairing three national committees and serving a
19term on the national conference; he served and held leadership
20roles in the National Communication Association, the Central
21States Communication Association, and the National Association
22of Communication Administrators; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen believed his greatest enduring

1contribution to the field of communication was when he served
2as the conference planner and keynote speaker at the National
3Communication Association's 1999 summer conference where he
4was instrumental in the formulation of the Credo for Ethical
5Communication, which was later adopted by the association; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen received a number of awards and
7accolades during his career, including the Association of State
8Conferences' Tracey Award and National Communication
9Association's Distinguished Service Award for his efforts; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen developed an interest in
11classical music and theater from a young age; he enjoyed live
12musical theater and Broadway musicals; he supported and
13sponsored the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts as a
14member of the Colwell Society, then the Foellinger Society; he
15was a season subscriber to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for over
1620 years and to the San Francisco Opera for over a decade; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen was preceded in death by his
18three sisters and one brother; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Kenneth Andersen is survived by his wife, Mary;
20his son, Erik (Susan); and his grandchildren, Nickolas, Megan,
21and Alyssa; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Kenneth Eldon Andersen Ph.D. and extend our sincere condolences
4to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
5it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Kenneth Andersen as an expression of
8our deepest sympathy.
