| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Curtis J. Hieggelke, who passed on |
| 4 | | January 1, 2020; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was born to Harry and Glenna |
| 6 | | Hieggelke in Fargo, North Dakota on September 6, 1941; he |
| 7 | | graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and |
| 8 | | went on to earn a PhD in physics at the University of Nebraska, |
| 9 | | where he developed a lifelong passion for Cornhusker football; |
| 10 | | and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was an early adopter of |
| 12 | | technology on both the personal and professional level; he |
| 13 | | co-founded the Illinois Macintosh Users Group (IMUG) in 1985, |
| 14 | | just a year after Apple launched its seminal personal computer; |
| 15 | | he conducted research that was funded by the National Science |
| 16 | | Foundation, which led to the development of a series of |
| 17 | | workshops and textbooks, dubbed nTIPERs (Newtonian Tasks |
| 18 | | Inspired by Physics Education Research), that taught thousands |
| 19 | | of physics teachers how to deploy emerging technology in the |
| 20 | | service of higher education; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke led a college workshop team of |
| 22 | | three that was honored by the American Physical Society in 2009 |
|

| 1 | | for their innovative work in developing physics education in |
| 2 | | community colleges across the country; and
|
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was the author or co-author of |
| 4 | | six books; prior to his grant work, he ran the evening program |
| 5 | | at Joliet Junior College in addition to his work as a full-time |
| 6 | | faculty member; he was active in the teacher's union, serving |
| 7 | | as its president at one point, and in the American Association |
| 8 | | of Physics Teachers; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was selected for the Joliet |
| 10 | | Junior College Susan H. Wood Hall of Fame Award in 2012; this |
| 11 | | award capped off a forty-two-year career as a pioneering |
| 12 | | educator, including more than thirty years teaching at Joliet |
| 13 | | Junior College; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke was preceded in death by his |
| 15 | | parents, Harry and Glenna Hieggelke; his infant son, Todd |
| 16 | | Hieggelke; and his younger brother, Dennis Hieggelke; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Curtis Hieggelke is survived by his wife of 58 |
| 18 | | years, Estelle (Hanson) Hieggelke, his sister, Judy (Manard) |
| 19 | | Smith; his sister-in-law, Dawn Hieggelke; his sons, Brian (Jan) |
| 20 | | Hieggelke, Brent Hieggelke, Jason (Tara) Hieggelke, and Justin |
| 21 | | Hieggelke; his grandchildren, Erica (Fievel) Hieggelke, Margot |
| 22 | | Hieggelke, Todd Hieggelke, Morgan Hieggelke, Greta Hieggelke, |
