SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Illinois Senate is saddened to learn of the
3death of Herman V. Schaefer Jr. of Grundy County, who passed
4away on January 19, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Herman Schaefer was born to Catherine Mary
6(Scheffer) and Herman V. Schaefer Sr. in Seneca on September
723, 1927; he attended Seneca schools and was a member of St.
8Patrick's Catholic Church in Seneca early in his life; he met
9Carol J. Hill in high school, and they were married at St.
10Patrick's on July 29, 1950; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Herman Schaefer worked for Straightway Dairy for a
12short time after high school until he was able to live out his
13dream by entering a farming partnership with the Dunn Brothers
14of Morris; and
 
15    WHEREAS, As a lifelong grain farmer and recognized
16cattleman, Herman Schaefer raised a large herd of Simmental and
17Angus crossbreed beef cattle; he received local, state and
18national recognition over the years for his outstanding beef
19production herd, and, in 1980, he was recognized as the
20Seedstock Producer of the Year by the Illinois Livestock
21Association; and

1    WHEREAS, Herman Schaefer dedicated years of service to
2local and state government roles; he began his 38 year tenure
3on the Norman Township Board when he was elected a Township
4trustee in 1969 and served in this position until he was
5elected as Norman Township Supervisor in 1981; he served two
6terms on the Grundy County Board and was appointed to a
7two-year term in Springfield as the Illinois State Chairman of
8the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS)
9board in 1979; he also served as president of the Illinois Beef
10Improvement Federation and the Illinois Simmental Association;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Herman Schaefer and his wife Carol were active
13members of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Morris; they
14served on the parish council and helped to raise funds for the
15capital and operating needs of the church over the years;
16Herman had the pleasure of working with 4-H members and enjoyed
17seeing his cattle shown by youth throughout the state and on a
18national level; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Herman Schaefer was preceded in death by his wife
20of 67 years, Carol J. Hill Schaefer; his parents, Catherine
21Mary (Scheffer) and Herman V. Schaefer Sr.; his siblings, John
22(Lillian) Schaefer, Joseph (Lucille) Schaefer, Robert (Irene)
23Schaefer, Sylvia (Richard) Redmond, Mary (Gale) Wicks, and
24Bernadine (Al) Ruggie; and

1    WHEREAS, Herman Schaefer is survived by his children, Sue
2(Barry) Bivens, Kevin (Nancy) Schaefer, Rick Schaefer, Jan
3(Mark) Griglione, Greg (Marlene) Schaefer, Joy (Greg) Skaggs,
4Teresa (Joe) Fruland, Kerra (Brad) Guffey, and Pam (Doug Punke
5Sr.) Schaefer; his grandchildren, Jeremy (Sarah) Bivens, Josh
6(Tricia) Bivens, Jonathan (Lauren) Bivens, Kindra (Greg)
7Bender, Gage Phillips, Cora Bender, Kirsten Schaefer, Kaitlyn
8Schaefer, Annie (Chris) Novak, Dan Holler, Ryan (Alyssa)
9Schaefer, Nick (Nicole) Schaefer, Alan (Rosanna) Schaefer,
10Brittany (Channing Batz) Schaefer, Joe (Katie) Griglione, Tony

17sister-in-law, Irene Schaefer; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Herman V. Schaefer Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to
21his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
22further
