2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of The Very Reverend Father Gus Franklin | ||||||
4 | III, S.S.C. of Springfield, who passed away on May 3, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The Very Reverend Father Gus Franklin was born to | ||||||
6 | Ruth and Gus Franklin II in Bellevue, Kentucky on January 28, | ||||||
7 | 1938; he graduated from Bellevue High School in 1955 and | ||||||
8 | received his bachelor's degree from Eastern Kentucky State | ||||||
9 | College in 1959; he was named in the "Who's Who?" in the | ||||||
10 | National Students in American Universities and Colleges the | ||||||
11 | same year; he continued graduate studies at Indiana University, | ||||||
12 | where he received a Master of Science in Education; he also | ||||||
13 | attended the University of Illinois, receiving a master's | ||||||
14 | degree in mathematics in 1960; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The Very Reverend Father Gus Franklin entered | ||||||
16 | Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Nashotah, Wisconsin in | ||||||
17 | 1964 and graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity in Theology, Cum | ||||||
18 | Laude in 1967; he was ordained a Priest on December 9, 1967 for | ||||||
19 | the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield; he served several | ||||||
20 | parishes during his career in the Diocese of Springfield and | ||||||
21 | the Diocese of Quincy, retiring as Rector from the Church of | ||||||
22 | St. Andrew the Apostle in Peoria in 1998; after retirement, he | ||||||
23 | served as a Canon for the Cathedral in Springfield and |

1 | frequently as a supply priest in the Diocese as needed; he was | ||||||
2 | a bi-vocational Episcopal Priest for over thirty years, serving | ||||||
3 | as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of | ||||||
4 | Illinois and Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield; he | ||||||
5 | also taught at Bellevue High School for a year; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Very Reverend Father Gus Franklin was | ||||||
7 | passionate about organ music; he was an active member and past | ||||||
8 | president of the American Theater Organ Society and a founding | ||||||
9 | member of the ITOS; he continued in that role at the Cathedral | ||||||
10 | where he was the Chairman of the Musical Arts Committee; he was | ||||||
11 | also a member of the Springfield Choral Society for many years; | ||||||
12 | and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The Very Reverend Father Gus Franklin celebrated | ||||||
14 | the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood in | ||||||
15 | 2017 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul the Apostle; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, The Very Reverend Father Gus Franklin is survived | ||||||
17 | by his brother, Gary (Joyce); and his two nieces, Melissa | ||||||
18 | Franklin and Carol Lee Barber; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| ||||||
21 | The Very Reverend Father Gus Franklin III, S.S.C. and extend | ||||||
22 | our sincere
condolences to his family, friends, and all who |

1 | knew and loved
him; and be it further
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
| ||||||
3 | presented to the family of The Very Reverend Father Gus | ||||||
4 | Franklin as an expression of
our deepest sympathy.
