2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on on March 10, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was born in Chicago to Josephine and | ||||||
6 | Bill Scherwat on September 15, 1927; he graduated from Senn | ||||||
7 | High School and the University of Illinois, where he was a | ||||||
8 | member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was captain of the | ||||||
9 | swimming team; he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II | ||||||
10 | aboard the LST 1026 in the Pacific; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat began work as a teacher in District | ||||||
12 | 64 in North Chicago and was drafted into the U.S. Army during | ||||||
13 | the Korean War; he served in Japan, playing the trombone in the | ||||||
14 | band, welcoming dignitaries off the plane, and playing in honky | ||||||
15 | tonk bars at night; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat returned to his teaching career and | ||||||
17 | was soon offered the job of business manager for District 64, | ||||||
18 | where he spent his entire career; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat retired and spent his days at the | ||||||
20 | Bonnie Brook Golf Course selling golf balls and fishing in Iron | ||||||
21 | River, Wisconsin whenever he could; he moved to Florida in 2007 |

1 | after the passing of Rosemary and met the second love of his | ||||||
2 | life, Annie Yates; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was an expert swimmer; he worked as a | ||||||
4 | lifeguard on Lake Michigan at the Chicago beaches, and his love | ||||||
5 | of water continued with a 60-year fishing tradition, the Skal | ||||||
6 | Cup Memorial Day fishing tournament, which carries on through | ||||||
7 | his grandsons; he treasured his friendships, especially a group | ||||||
8 | of lifelong friends who called themselves the Lucky Club and | ||||||
9 | played golf and had raucous holiday parties together; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat played competitive volleyball into | ||||||
11 | his 60s with men half his age; he was honored by the AARP for 20 | ||||||
12 | years of volunteer tax preparation; he was also a prize-winning | ||||||
13 | gardener; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
15 | Rosemary (Musso); his parents; his brother, Bob Scherwat; and | ||||||
16 | his sister, Carole Muret; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Don Scherwat is survived by his daughters, Tish | ||||||
18 | (Ken) Pasiewicz and Mary Ellen Montavon (Dennis Hildebrand); | ||||||
19 | his grandsons, Mike and Scott Ratkiewicz; his Florida soul | ||||||
20 | mate, Annie Yates; and his nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |

1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
2 | Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
3 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
4 | it further

5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Don Scherwat as an expression of our | ||||||
7 | deepest sympathy.
