SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dennis R. Shackelford of Rochester, who passed away on July 21, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Shackelford was born in Lafayette, Indiana to George Shackelford and Betty Jo Shackelford on November 4, 1958; he attended Rochester High School and Springfield College in Illinois; he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville; he married Judy Langfelder on March 4, 1984; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Shackelford owned Judy's Hallmark shops in the Springfield area; he was the youngest Hallmark franchisee at the time he opened the stores, serving the community for over 30 years; after retiring, he went into banking and worked for the Williamsville State Bank and Trust, where he also served on the Board of Directors; over the span of his career, he received numerous awards and developed countless friendships with coworkers and customers; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Shackelford remained invested in the development of small businesses in his community as an active member of the Taylorville, Decatur, and Greater Springfield Chambers of Commerce; he served on the Board of Trustees for Lincoln Land Community College for six years, and he was chair for two of those years; he was also a trustee of the Rochester Township Board; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Shackelford was known for his easy manner, quick wit, mentorship, and generosity; he was affectionately known as "Pappy" and "Champ" by his grandchildren; he will be remembered as a devoted family man who remained true to his beliefs and principles; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Shackelford was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Ossie and Midge Langfelder; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Shackelford is survived by his wife, Judy; his children, Andrew Shackelford, Lindsey (Lance) Miller, Amy (Tommy) Nika, and Emily Shackelford; his grandchildren, Griffin Miller, Nora Miller, and Regan Nika; his sisters, Sue Ann Kruger, Jeanne (Rick) Eilering, and Linda (Chuck) Lee; his beloved Langfelder sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and his nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dennis R. Shackelford and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dennis Shackelford as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
