SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Fred Meek of Rantoul, who passed away on November 26, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Fred Meek was born in Rochester, Pennsylvania to Elden and Evalyn T. Meek on February 28, 1943; he attended grades K-12 in the East Palestine school system in Ohio; he graduated from East Palestine High School in June 1961; he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio; later, he conducted graduate studies in marketing at the University of Illinois; he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at a number of bases, including Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas, Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, and CCK Air Force Base in Taichung, Taiwan; he married Linda M. Schluter at the American Lutheran Church in Rantoul on August 23, 1970; together, they had two children, Marcy Todd and Michael Meek; and

WHEREAS, Fred Meek joined the J.C. Penney Company in Rochester, New York until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force; after his military service, he worked in the home building and modular building businesses for 35 years, spending the last 27 years with Schluter Homes; and

WHEREAS, Fred Meek was an active member of the American Lutheran Church in Rantoul, where he served as president of the church council for two years; he was a member and held leadership positions in several organizations, including the Thomasboro Board of Education as president for six years, the Rantoul Exchange Club as president, the Rantoul Rotary, the Northern Champaign County Community Service Organization's Board of Directors, the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum Foundation as secretary, the Thomasboro Board of Trustees and Pack the Park Festivities, Thomasboro Youth Baseball, and the Rantoul Area Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors; he volunteered with the Northern Champaign County Community Service Organization; and

WHEREAS, Fred Meek enjoyed spending time with his family, whatever the occasion; he also enjoyed being with people, golfing, being involved in community organizations, and attending athletic events; and

WHEREAS, Fred Meek was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Fannie Meek; his maternal grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth Taggart; and his two older brothers and best friends, Robert and John; and

WHEREAS, Fred Meek is survived by his wife; his children; and his granddaughter, Olivia; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Fred Meek and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Fred Meek as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
