| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Nancy Staunton, who passed away on |
| 4 | | November 24, 2019 at the age of 90; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton was born Anna Jean O'Malley but was |
| 6 | | known as Nancy; she was born on November 18, 1929 in Englewood |
| 7 | | to Irish immigrants, the youngest child of four; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton attended St. Brendan's Church and |
| 9 | | Mercy High School; her father died when she was just a |
| 10 | | teenager, and her sister Sarah Margaret, who was ten years |
| 11 | | older, played a large part in her upbringing; she stayed close |
| 12 | | to her sister, as well as her other siblings until they all |
| 13 | | passed away; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton earned a Bachelor of Science in |
| 15 | | Nursing in 1951 from St. Xavier College and took a nursing |
| 16 | | position at Mercy hospital, all while working as a part-time |
| 17 | | courier nurse for the Santa Fe Railroad on trips between |
| 18 | | Chicago and Los Angeles; and |
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton met her husband, Patrick Staunton, |
| 20 | | in 1952, and they had six children together before moving to |
| 21 | | their home on Linden Avenue, where they lived for the next 28 |

| 1 | | years; and |
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton joined the League of Women Voters |
| 3 | | in 1967 and spent over three years working on various issues |
| 4 | | with the Board of Health Committee, the Racial Diversity Task |
| 5 | | Force, and the Village Services Committee, as well as a |
| 6 | | committee that performed an extensive study of Cook County |
| 7 | | Government; her contributions were recognized with the Hazel |
| 8 | | Hansen Award; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton returned to school in 1976 and |
| 10 | | earned a Master of Public Health from the University of |
| 11 | | Illinois at Chicago, which led to work in health care planning, |
| 12 | | primarily with the Chicago Suburban Health Services Agency; and |
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton was elected an Oak Park village |
| 14 | | trustee in 1985 and faced numerous complex issues during her |
| 15 | | six year tenure, including gun control, recognition of AIDS, |
| 16 | | policies on non-discrimination, recycling, economic |
| 17 | | development, union/management disputes, and an investigation |
| 18 | | of the police department conducted by author and lawyer, Scott |
| 19 | | Turow; and |
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton served on the Institutional Review |
| 21 | | Board of Loyola University Medical Center and the boards of the |
| 22 | | Housing Center and the Family Services and Mental Health |
|

| 1 | | Center; and |
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton also served on the Oak Park Board |
| 3 | | of Health and helped start and staff a hospice group for the |
| 4 | | Community Nursing Service in Oak Park, all while volunteering |
| 5 | | at a variety of local organizations, including the Hemingway |
| 6 | | Birthplace Home and Museum; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton and her husband, Pat, retired and |
| 8 | | spent time at their cottage in Coloma, Michigan; in her last |
| 9 | | three years, she spent her time in Walnut Creek, California |
| 10 | | with her daughters, Mary and Anne; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton is survived by her children, Kevin |
| 12 | | (Maria), Mary, Anne, Brian (Liz), Jane (Max), and Tom, and her |
| 13 | | grandchildren, Jack, Kyle, Luke, Will, Van, Kevin, and Finn; |
| 14 | | therefore, be it

| 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
| 16 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 17 | | Nancy Staunton and extend our sincere condolences to her |
| 18 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
| 19 | | further

| 20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 21 | | presented to the family of Nancy Staunton as an expression of |
