| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Robert Hellenga of Galesburg, who passed |
| 4 | | away on July 18, 2020 at the age of 78; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Robert Hellenga was born to Ted and Marjorie |
| 6 | | Hellenga in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 5, 1941; a member of |
| 7 | | Phi Beta Kappa, he graduated with a bachelor's degree from the |
| 8 | | University of Michigan in 1963 and then earned a doctorate from |
| 9 | | Princeton University in 1969; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Robert Hellenga began his tenure as a professor of |
| 11 | | English at Knox University in Galesburg in 1968; he shared his |
| 12 | | knowledge and expertise at the university for over fifty years; |
| 13 | | he was a teacher and mentor to generations of writing students, |
| 14 | | including Senate President Don Harmon; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Robert Hellenga received recognition for his |
| 16 | | outstanding work at Knox College as a George Appleton Lawrence |
| 17 | | Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of English and a |
| 18 | | Distinguished Writer In-Residence; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Robert Hellenga was an award-winning author of |
| 20 | | multiple critically-acclaimed novels, including The Fall of a |
| 21 | | Sparrow (which won awards for Best Fiction from Publishers |
