SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Leroy Jordan of Springfield, who passed
4away on September 5, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan was born in Murphysboro to Edward Sr.
6and Alma Johnson Jordan on December 27, 1941; he graduated from
7Murphysboro High School, where he was a defensive back and
8inducted into their Hall of Fame; he received his bachelor's
9degree in education from Southern Illinois University and his
10master's degree from Sangamon State University; he married
11Johnetta Williams in Murphysboro on August 5, 1963; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan began his career as a schoolteacher
13in Hopkins Park and then moved to Springfield, where he taught
14for District 186; he was the first African American male
15schoolteacher in a classroom in Springfield; from 1976 to 1982,
16he was a member of the District 186 School Board, serving as
17president twice; he also served on the Catholic School Board;
18he was the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Sangamon State
19University and an assistant superintendent for District 186; he
20was the principal of the adult education program at Southeast
21High School in Springfield and worked for the Springfield
22Diocese as director of the Black Catholic Ministries; and

1    WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi
2Fraternity, Prince Hall Masons, the NAACP, the Urban League,
3the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, and the Faith Coalition
4for the Common Good; he was a Springfield Dominican Associate
5and was co-chair of the Springfield Dominican Anti-Racism Team;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan was preceded in death by his parents
8and his brothers, Peter Bruce Jordan and Edward Jordan Jr.; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan is survived by his wife, Johnetta;
10his daughters, Laura A. Jordan, Loralean A. Jordan, Jennifer N.
11Jordan (Rose White), and Rose Ann (Keith) White; his
12grandchildren, Christian Jordan, Levi Jordan-White, and Ariel
13Baldon; his siblings, Margaret Griffin, Linda Jordan, and
14Melvin (Martha) Jordan; and numerous nieces, nephews, and
15cousins; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Leroy Jordan and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
19friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Leroy Jordan as an expression of our
22deepest sympathy.
