2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Leroy Jordan of Springfield, who passed |
4 | | away on September 5, 2020; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan was born in Murphysboro to Edward Sr. |
6 | | and Alma Johnson Jordan on December 27, 1941; he graduated from |
7 | | Murphysboro High School, where he was a defensive back and |
8 | | inducted into their Hall of Fame; he received his bachelor's |
9 | | degree in education from Southern Illinois University and his |
10 | | master's degree from Sangamon State University; he married |
11 | | Johnetta Williams in Murphysboro on August 5, 1963; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan began his career as a schoolteacher |
13 | | in Hopkins Park and then moved to Springfield, where he taught |
14 | | for District 186; he was the first African American male |
15 | | schoolteacher in a classroom in Springfield; from 1976 to 1982, |
16 | | he was a member of the District 186 School Board, serving as |
17 | | president twice; he also served on the Catholic School Board; |
18 | | he was the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Sangamon State |
19 | | University and an assistant superintendent for District 186; he |
20 | | was the principal of the adult education program at Southeast |
21 | | High School in Springfield and worked for the Springfield |
22 | | Diocese as director of the Black Catholic Ministries; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi |
2 | | Fraternity, Prince Hall Masons, the NAACP, the Urban League, |
3 | | the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, and the Faith Coalition |
4 | | for the Common Good; he was a Springfield Dominican Associate |
5 | | and was co-chair of the Springfield Dominican Anti-Racism Team; |
6 | | and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan was preceded in death by his parents |
8 | | and his brothers, Peter Bruce Jordan and Edward Jordan Jr.; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Leroy Jordan is survived by his wife, Johnetta; |
10 | | his daughters, Laura A. Jordan, Loralean A. Jordan, Jennifer N. |
11 | | Jordan (Rose White), and Rose Ann (Keith) White; his |
12 | | grandchildren, Christian Jordan, Levi Jordan-White, and Ariel |
13 | | Baldon; his siblings, Margaret Griffin, Linda Jordan, and |
14 | | Melvin (Martha) Jordan; and numerous nieces, nephews, and |
15 | | cousins; therefore, be it

16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
18 | | Leroy Jordan and extend our sincere condolences to his family, |
19 | | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
21 | | presented to the family of Leroy Jordan as an expression of our |
22 | | deepest sympathy.
