SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Etta Lerene Coker-Martin, who passed away
4on December 8, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Etta Coker-Martin was born to Mark and Mary Coker
6in Chicago on September 12, 1952; she graduated from Harrison
7High School in 1971 and then studied Human Services at Elmhurst
8College; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Etta Coker-Martin spent many years at Service
10Master working in the payroll department; she then found a
11passion for serving others and started at Park-River Forest
12High School as a college and career counselor and then became a
13teaching assistant for special needs students; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Etta Coker-Martin tutored for the Black Star
15Project and Answer Inc., provided mentorship for F.R.E.E.
16(Females Reaching for Educational Excellence), and became the
17volunteer and outreach coordinator for Housing Forward; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Etta Coker-Martin was a valued member of Rock of
19Ages Baptist Church where she loved her fellowship with the
20Savvy Senior Ministry; she was also a proud member of the
21Bookends Book Club; and

1    WHEREAS, Etta Coker-Martin loved reading, her family, and
2her faith; she had a vivacious smile and found great joy in
3helping others; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Etta Coker-Martin was preceded in death by her
5father; her son, Justin Martin; and her lifelong special
6friend, Lynda Puckett; her mother soon joined her in passing;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Etta Coker-Martin is survived by her daughter,
9Ebony Martin; her brother, Marlon Coker; her grandchildren,
10Elani Williams and Elise Reese; her nieces, Candice Conley and
11Dominique Johnson; and her many cousins and friends; therefore,
12be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15Etta Lerene Coker-Martin and extend our sincere condolences to
16her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Etta Coker-Martin as an expression
20of our deepest sympathy.
