| 1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, It is appropriate to remember the many sacrifices | ||||||
| 3 | and contributions to the cause of freedom made by the | ||||||
| 4 | outstanding men and women who served in the United States | ||||||
| 5 | Armed Forces; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Jay | ||||||
| 7 | and Hazel (Fick) Stein on July 8, 1963; he married Barbara | ||||||
| 8 | Nelson in Macomb on July 9, 1983; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein grew up in the Macomb area and | ||||||
| 10 | moved away in 1983; he graduated from the Rochester Institute | ||||||
| 11 | of Technology in 1985; he received his master's degree from | ||||||
| 12 | the University of Maryland; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was commissioned into the United | ||||||
| 14 | States Army and transferred to the United States Air Force; | ||||||
| 15 | during his military career, he flew 3,901 hours; he | ||||||
| 16 | volunteered for the rescue mission he was flying when he was | ||||||
| 17 | killed in Afghanistan on March 23, 2003; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, During his military career, Lt. Col. Stein | ||||||
| 19 | received a Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal, an Aerial | ||||||
| 20 | Achievement Medal, an Air Force Commendation Medal, an Army | ||||||
| 21 | Commendation Medal, and an Army Achievement Medal; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein's passing has been deeply felt by | ||||||
| 2 | many, especially his wife, Barbara Nelson Stein; his father, | ||||||
| 3 | Jay W. Stein; his mother, Hazel Henry; his two sons, Doug and | ||||||
| 4 | Tim Stein; his daughter, Erin Stein Jones; his sisters, Holly | ||||||
| 5 | Stein, Navida (James McLaughlin) Stein, and April Stein; his | ||||||
| 6 | six nieces; and his two nephews; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was preceded in death by his | ||||||
| 8 | grandparents; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 10 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
| 11 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the portion of Old | ||||||
| 12 | Highway 136 from E. 950th St. to E. 750th St. between Macomb | ||||||
| 13 | and Colchester as the "Lt. Col. John Stein Memorial Highway"; | ||||||
| 14 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
| 16 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
| 17 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
| 18 | giving notice of the name of "Lt. Col. John Stein Memorial | ||||||
| 19 | Highway"; and be it further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the Secretary of Transportation and the family of | ||||||
