HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, On September 1, 1961, just after two in the 
3morning, Trans World Airlines Flight 529 took off from Midway 
4Airport bound for Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco; 
5and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Five minutes into the flight, a two-inch long 
7bolt snapped in the plane's elevator assembly, which caused 
8the plane to crash in what is today Willowbrook, Illinois; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, TWA Flight 529 crashed into an open field and 
10immediately burst into flames, leaving behind a debris field 
11of 200 by 1,100 feet; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, 73 passengers, four of whom were from the Chicago 
13land area, and five crew members were all killed on impact, 
14making the crash of TWA Flight 529 the deadliest single plane 
15crash at the time; and
  
 
16    WHEREAS, The four Chicago area victims were a pharmacist 
17from Evanston who was on his way to visit his parents in Los 
18Angeles, a nurse from MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn departing for 
19a vacation in San Francisco, and two servicemen returning to 
20duty in California; and

1    WHEREAS, September 1 of 2021 will mark the 60 year 
2anniversary of this tragedy; therefore, be it
  
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
4HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE 
5SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare September 1, 2021 as 
6Trans World Airlines Flight 529 Memorial Day in the State of 
7Illinois; and be it further
  
 
8    RESOLVED, That we remember and mourn those we lost on that 
9tragic day in 1961 and extend our sincere condolences to their 
10families and friends.
