| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Honorable Wyvetter H. Younge was one of the |
| 3 | | longest serving representatives in the Illinois House of |
| 4 | | Representatives; she was first elected to the House in 1975 |
| 5 | | and made urban renewal one of her top priorities; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Younge was born on August 23, 1930 in St. |
| 7 | | Louis, Missouri, the youngest of five children; her mother, |
| 8 | | Annie Hoover, managed a restaurant in East St. Louis, and her |
| 9 | | father sold insurance and owned various properties; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Younge graduated from Lincoln Senior High |
| 11 | | School in East St. Louis; after graduating, she attended the |
| 12 | | Hampton Institute for her undergraduate degree; in 1953, she |
| 13 | | earned a law degree from the St. Louis University School of |
| 14 | | Law, and in 1972, she earned a second law degree from the |
| 15 | | Washington University School of Law; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, While in Springfield, Rep. Younge was a true |
| 17 | | champion for the people of her district; many of the bills she |
| 18 | | sponsored focused on issues such as substance abuse treatment, |
| 19 | | services for the homeless, and economic development in St. |
| 20 | | Clair County; after her passing, Illinois House Speaker |
| 21 | | Michael Madigan told reporters, "Wyvetter was a tireless |
| 22 | | advocate for East St. Louis who never stopped trying to |
