HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, In order to bring more inclusivity to the state, Illinois must discuss the importance of disability awareness; and

WHEREAS, Disability awareness means educating people regarding disabilities and giving people the knowledge required to carry out a job or task, thus separating good practice from poor; and

WHEREAS, Many kids with disabilities are being integrated into the mainstream of the public school system so age appropriate education and refreshers are becoming even more important to teach our children; and

WHEREAS, In order to achieve a successful integration, it is important to implement disability awareness for all children across the state; and

WHEREAS, One of the biggest barriers people with disabilities encounter on a daily basis is other people; and

WHEREAS, Between 2009 and 2015, individuals with disabilities were more than twice as likely to be victims of violent victimization compared to people without disabilities; and

WHEREAS, In one study, only 39 percent of respondents with disabilities reported that they had disclosed their disability to a manager, and an even fewer 24 percent had told other colleagues for fear of teasing, harassment, and potential changes in coworker relationships; and

WHEREAS, A research team reviewed information from the U.S. 2012 elections and found that almost a third of voters with disabilities experienced some kind of difficulty in the voting process; this differed greatly from those without disabilities; and

WHEREAS, The only way to stop these violent crimes and open discrimination against those with disabilities is to bring awareness to the issue and help educate people about the issues facing those with a disability; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we acknowledge the hardships faced by those with a disability and the need to increase education and awareness of these issues for people throughout the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we encourage all citizens to educate themselves on the issues surrounding disabilities and to treat those with disabilities with love and respect.
