| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Sangamon County on the | ||||||
| 4 | occasion of its bicentennial anniversary on January 30, 2021; | ||||||
| 5 | and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Sangamon County was established by an act of the | ||||||
| 7 | Illinois General Assembly on January 30, 1821; at that time, | ||||||
| 8 | it was subdivided from Madison and Bond counties and was one of | ||||||
| 9 | only 33 counties in Illinois; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Sangamon County was named for the Sangamon River, | ||||||
| 11 | which runs through it; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, The Kelley Family, Elisha, John, Henry, and their | ||||||
| 13 | relatives, are usually considered the first Europeans to live | ||||||
| 14 | in the boundaries of what is now Springfield; John Kelley, who | ||||||
| 15 | arrived in Sangamon County in the spring of 1819, built a cabin | ||||||
| 16 | in 1821 near what is now Second and Jefferson streets that was | ||||||
| 17 | used as the first Sangamon County courthouse; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Springfield was confirmed as the permanent county | ||||||
| 19 | seat in 1825 following the Illinois General Assembly's | ||||||
| 20 | decision to reduce Sangamon County's boundaries for the first | ||||||
| 21 | time; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Since 1821, Sangamon County and its residents | ||||||
| 2 | have played a vital role in the State's history and the | ||||||
| 3 | country's history and has been home to many notable residents | ||||||
| 4 | and events; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, The bicentennial anniversary of Sangamon County | ||||||
| 6 | is an opportunity to reflect on the past 200 years and | ||||||
| 7 | celebrate the many cultural, political, economic, and academic | ||||||
| 8 | contributions made by the county and its residents to the | ||||||
| 9 | state, the nation, and the world; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Today, Sangamon County is known as a model of | ||||||
| 11 | good government practices and for providing timely and | ||||||
| 12 | efficient services to the residents; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Sangamon County has demonstrated its ability to | ||||||
| 14 | offer good stewardship of taxpayer dollars by maintaining low | ||||||
| 15 | taxes on its residents while also making investments for the | ||||||
| 16 | future; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Sangamon County has been a leader on critical | ||||||
| 18 | public works projects, including the 10th Street Rail | ||||||
| 19 | Consolidation project in Springfield, which has been | ||||||
| 20 | recognized as one of the top public works projects in the | ||||||
| 21 | nation due in part to the county's leadership at shepherding | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | this project along with other community partners; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives is honored | ||||||
| 3 | to conduct the business of the people of the State of Illinois | ||||||
| 4 | in Sangamon County, the home county of President Abraham | ||||||
| 5 | Lincoln, and looks forward to many more years of success to | ||||||
| 6 | come; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 8 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 9 | we congratulate Sangamon County on the occasion of its | ||||||
| 10 | bicentennial and send our best wishes for the future to the | ||||||
| 11 | people and leaders of Sangamon County; and be it further
| ||||||
| 12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 13 | presented to the Chairman of the Sangamon County Board and all | ||||||
| 14 | Sangamon County Board Members as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
| 15 | respect.
