HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Menopause is a natural biological process, which occurs 12 months after a woman's last period; and

WHEREAS, Although awareness and research into menopause and its impacts has improved in recent years, historically, inadequate research has been done on menopause, and the scientific understanding of menopause has been limited due to a lack of data; and

WHEREAS, Menopause, like menstruation and other aspects of reproductive health, is often misunderstood, and misinformation and myths about the topic are common; and

WHEREAS, The menopausal transition most often begins between ages 45 and 55; and

WHEREAS, Perimenopause marks the years leading up to menopause, which may include menopausal signs and symptoms as menstruation continues but may become irregular and pregnancy is possible but less likely; and

WHEREAS, Some women are impacted by symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, and others, which may impact physical or emotional health; and

WHEREAS, There are many treatments available for symptoms related to menopause, including hormone replacement therapy, holistic solutions, and lifestyle adjustments; and

WHEREAS, Increased awareness of menopause will lead to an improvement in the understanding of this phase of reproductive health and improved treatment and outcomes for those impacted; and

WHEREAS, The International Menopause Society (IMS), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has designated October as World Menopause Awareness Month; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the month of October 2021 as Menopause Awareness Month in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we support raising awareness of menopause as it is critical to dispelling the myths and ensuring that the symptoms of menopause are recognized and that treatment is identified and secured where needed; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we support raising awareness of all aspects of a woman's reproductive cycle as it is critical to ensuring understanding, compassion, and support for those experiencing menopause while dispelling the myths and shattering the stigma associated with menopause.
