| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Christine J. Sobek, |
| 4 | | Ed.D., on the occasion of her 20th year serving as president of |
| 5 | | Waubonsee Community College; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek became the fourth president of |
| 7 | | Waubonsee Community College on July 1, 2001; in this role, she |
| 8 | | is responsible for the overall leadership of the college, |
| 9 | | which serves more than 14,000 students each year, employs |
| 10 | | approximately 1,100 employees, and provides educational |
| 11 | | programs and services at a network of four permanent campuses |
| 12 | | located across the 624-square-mile college district and |
| 13 | | through extensive virtual and online classes and services; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek has more than 40 years of community |
| 15 | | college administrative experience; she served in several |
| 16 | | administrative roles at Waubonsee Community College prior to |
| 17 | | her appointment as president, including provost from 2000 to |
| 18 | | 2001, executive vice president for Educational Affairs from |
| 19 | | 1997 to 2000, assistant vice president for Instruction from |
| 20 | | 1993 to 1997, assistant vice president for Student Development |
| 21 | | from 1991 to 1993, and dean of Student Development from 1989 to |
| 22 | | 1991; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Prior to joining Waubonsee Community College in |
| 2 | | 1989, Dr. Sobek served at the College of Lake County in |
| 3 | | Grayslake for 11 years, where her leadership roles included |
| 4 | | executive assistant to the president, director of Personnel, |
| 5 | | Affirmative Action officer, and director of Placement; she |
| 6 | | also served as an adjunct faculty member at Trinity College in |
| 7 | | Deerfield from 1985 to 1989 and as an assistant director of |
| 8 | | Student Affairs at Lyman Briggs Residential College at |
| 9 | | Michigan State University; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek has participated in a number of local |
| 11 | | organizations, including serving as a member of the Invest |
| 12 | | Aurora Board of Directors, the Marmion Academy Board of |
| 13 | | Trustees, the Mutual Ground Advisory Board, the Conservation |
| 14 | | Foundation Leadership Board and as trustee emeritus, and |
| 15 | | serving as vice chair of the City of Aurora Education |
| 16 | | Commission and the Rush-Copley Medical Center Board of |
| 17 | | Directors; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek belongs to several regional, state, and |
| 19 | | national organizations; on the regional and state level, she |
| 20 | | is a member of the Illinois Facilities Fund, where she serves |
| 21 | | on the Chicago Area Local Market Advisory Committee, and the |
| 22 | | Illinois Council of Community College Presidents; on the |
| 23 | | national level, she belongs to the Association of American |
| 24 | | Colleges and Universities Presidents' Trust, the Alliance for |
|

| 1 | | Innovation and Transformation as an executive committee member |
| 2 | | and a secretary/treasurer, and the American Association of |
| 3 | | Community Colleges Advocacy Advisory Group; and

| 4 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek has received a number of accolades |
| 5 | | during her career, including Crain's Chicago Business |
| 6 | | Chicago's Notable Women in Education, the Quad County Urban |
| 7 | | League's Woman of Power Award, Phi Theta Kappa International |
| 8 | | Honor Society's Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction, and |
| 9 | | the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Advocacy |
| 10 | | Award; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek earned her doctoral degree from |
| 12 | | Northern Illinois University, her master's degree from |
| 13 | | Michigan State University, and her bachelor's degree from |
| 14 | | Purdue University; she is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and an |
| 15 | | honorary member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor |
| 16 | | Society; therefore, be it

| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 18 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 19 | | we congratulate Christine J. Sobek, Ed.D., on serving as |
| 20 | | president of Waubonsee Community College for the past 20 |
| 21 | | years, thank her for her commitment to the community and the |
| 22 | | State of Illinois, and wish her continued success; and be it |
