| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Alpha on |
| 4 | | its sesquicentennial on June 1, 2022; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, On June 1, 1872, Anson Calkins created a plan for |
| 6 | | the Village of Alpha; it was created as a railroad town and |
| 7 | | replaced the town of Oxford, which was located approximately |
| 8 | | three miles west of current day Alpha; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Alpha was located at the junction between two |
| 10 | | lines of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad; a |
| 11 | | since-razed depot was located at the junction; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, The village was named Alpha, the first letter of |
| 13 | | the Greek alphabet, because Anson Calkins believed it was the |
| 14 | | beginning of a great city; it was officially incorporated on |
| 15 | | January 11, 1895; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Today, the population of Alpha is home to |
| 17 | | approximately 700 people; nestled on the corners of Knox, |
| 18 | | Henry, and Mercer counties along US Highway 150, the town is a |
| 19 | | quiet bedroom community located between three large population |
| 20 | | centers, consisting of the Quad Cities with 381,000 people, |
| 21 | | Galesburg with 77,000 people, and Peoria with 416,000 people; |
