HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was established in 2003 to advance life science research and stimulate bioeconomic development in Illinois by investing in the burgeoning field of genomics; and

WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a state-of-the-art research facility with a structure designed to promote communication and collaboration among its members, was dedicated in 2007; and

WHEREAS, The membership of the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois has grown to comprise a transdisciplinary contingent of more than 200 faculty and affiliate members and more than 700 other research staff and students, all from more than 40 different academic departments; and

WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is celebrating its 15th anniversary of path-breaking genomic research to address grand societal challenges in the areas of agriculture, environmental conservation, health, wellness, technology, and society; and

WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is committed to the use of science to positively impact society and also to the larger goal of promoting an open dialogue between science and society; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on its 15 years of significant societal, scientific, and scholarly contributions made to research at the intersection of science and society within the state of Illinois, resulting in over $520M in funding and the establishment of more than 20 start-up and small companies; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
