| 2 | | WHEREAS, The first day of April is celebrated annually as |
| 3 | | the Assyrian New Year, also known as Kha b'Nissan or Akitu; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, The Assyrian New Year is not only the first day of |
| 5 | | the new year but also marks the start of spring and serves as a |
| 6 | | symbol of revival; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, According to the Assyrian Policy Institute, |
| 8 | | Illinois is home to more than 80,000 Assyrian Americans; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, The Assyrian New Year serves to remind the State |
| 10 | | of Illinois of the many substantial contributions the Assyrian |
| 11 | | community has made to Illinois and the social fabric of our |
| 12 | | state; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, In their various countries of origin, including |
| 14 | | Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran, governing authorities |
| 15 | | historically infringed on the cultural and linguistic rights |
| 16 | | of Assyrians and prohibited public celebrations of the |
| 17 | | Assyrian New Year; and

| 18 | | WHEREAS, It is imperative that members of the Assyrian |
| 19 | | community across the globe feel seen, valued, and encouraged |
| 20 | | to celebrate and preserve their cultural heritage; therefore, |
