Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that a school bus owner may affix to the school bus a sign displaying the fines a driver may incur if the driver passes a school bus while: (i) the school bus is stopped and the stop signal arm is extended; or (ii) the school bus is stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging pupils. Provides that the sign may be affixed to the back of the school bus or to the stop arm signal.

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by |
5 | | changing Section 12-803 as follows:
|
6 | | (625 ILCS 5/12-803) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-803)

7 | | Sec. 12-803.
(a) Each school bus shall be equipped with a |
8 | | stop signal
arm on the driver's side of the school bus that may |
9 | | be operated either manually
or mechanically. For each school |
10 | | bus manufactured on and after September 1,
1992, the stop |
11 | | signal arm shall be an octagon shaped semaphore that conforms |
12 | | to
49 C.F.R. 571.131, "SCHOOL BUS PEDESTRIAN SAFETY DEVICES", |
13 | | S5.1 through S5.5.

14 | | (b) Each school bus manufactured prior to September 1, |
15 | | 1992 shall be
equipped with a stop signal arm that conforms to |
16 | | standards promulgated by the
Department.

17 | | (c) A school bus owner may affix to the school bus a sign |
18 | | displaying the fines a driver may incur under subsection (f) |
19 | | of Section 11-1414 if the driver passes a school bus while: (i) |
20 | | the school bus is stopped and the stop signal arm is extended; |
21 | | or (ii) the school bus is stopped for the purpose of receiving |
22 | | or discharging pupils. The sign may be affixed to the back of |
23 | | the school bus or to the stop arm signal. |
