| 1 | SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, It is appropriate to remember the many sacrifices | ||||||
| 3 | and contributions to the cause of freedom made by the | ||||||
| 4 | outstanding men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces; | ||||||
| 5 | and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. John Stein was born in Des Moines, Iowa | ||||||
| 7 | to Jay and Hazel (Fick) Stein on July 8, 1963; he married | ||||||
| 8 | Barbara Nelson in Macomb on July 9, 1983; he grew up in the | ||||||
| 9 | Macomb area and moved away in 1983; he graduated from the | ||||||
| 10 | Rochester Institute of Technology in 1985; he received his | ||||||
| 11 | master's degree from the University of Maryland; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was commissioned into the U.S. | ||||||
| 13 | Army and transferred to the U.S. Air Force; during his | ||||||
| 14 | military career, he flew 3,901 hours; he volunteered for the | ||||||
| 15 | rescue mission he was flying when he was killed in Afghanistan | ||||||
| 16 | on March 23, 2003; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, During his military career, Lt. Col. Stein | ||||||
| 18 | received a Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal, an Aerial | ||||||
| 19 | Achievement Medal, an Air Force Commendation Medal, an Army | ||||||
| 20 | Commendation Medal, and an Army Achievement Medal; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was preceded in death by his | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | grandparents; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein's passing has been deeply felt by | ||||||
| 3 | many, especially his wife, Barbara Nelson Stein; his father, | ||||||
| 4 | Jay W. Stein; his mother, Hazel Henry; his two sons, Doug and | ||||||
| 5 | Tim Stein; his daughter, Erin Stein Jones; his sisters, Holly | ||||||
| 6 | Stein, Navida (James McLaughlin) Stein, and April Stein; his | ||||||
| 7 | six nieces; and his two nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
| 9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF | ||||||
| 10 | REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the | ||||||
| 11 | portion of Old Highway 136 from E. 950th St. to E. 750th St. | ||||||
| 12 | between Macomb and Colchester as the "Lt. Col. John Stein | ||||||
| 13 | Memorial Highway"; and be it further
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
| 15 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
| 16 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
| 17 | giving notice of the name of "Lt. Col. John Stein Memorial | ||||||
| 18 | Highway"; and be it further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to the Secretary of Transportation and the family of | ||||||
| 21 | Lt. Col. Stein.
