SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Rev. Betty Anne Hornback of Pekin, who
4passed away on January 7, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Betty Hornback was born in Poughkeepsie, New York
6to William Amos Lovekin Parke and Marion Elizabeth (Nyborg)
7Parke on April 24, 1937; she married Junior Neal Scurlock in
8Pekin on April 1, 1956; she later married Richard Dean
9Hornback in Pekin on July 28, 1984; she graduated from
10Sangamon State University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts in
11English and earned her Master of Arts in Human Development
12Counseling from the University of Illinois at Springfield in
131997; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Betty Hornback worked for the Methodist Medical
15Center in Peoria and Neurological Associates in Peoria, and
16then as the office manager/secretary for Arcadia Presbyterian
17Church in Peoria; in 1986, she became aware of a licensed
18ministry preparation program to train to be licensed for
19ministry in the United Church of Christ; she was the first
20candidate to enter this program in the Western Association in
21the Illinois Conference and became licensed on May 3, 1988;
22she was ordained in the United Church of Christ on June 8, 2001
23and served congregations in Beardstown, Galesburg, Pekin,

1Paxton, Kewanee, Champaign, Mazon, Marseilles, and
2Chillicothe; and
 
3    WHEREAS, In 1999, Betty Hornback was one of three laywomen
4honored at the United Church of Christ's General Synod in
5Providence, Rhode Island for outstanding contributions to
6women's leadership development; she was honored in 2016 with
7the Chalice Award, recognizing her leadership and countless
8contributions to the Illinois Conference of the United Church
9of Christ; she was a member of the Congregational United
10Church of Christ in Pekin; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Betty Hornback's interests included genealogy,
12writing, and reading light mysteries; she loved her family and
13was passionate about attending family activities; she was a
14special grandmother to her grandkids, and three granddaughters
15were named after her, as well as one daughter; she loved
16traveling, especially to Meriden, Connecticut, where she lived
17as a young child; she also was a member of the Daughters of the
18American Revolution; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Betty Hornback was preceded in death by her
20husband, Richard; her parents; and her brother, Peter Alan;
21and
 
22    WHEREAS, Betty Hornback is survived by her daughters,

1Cathy L. (Ralph) Brown, Rebecca Anne Scurlock Gould, and
2Sheila Sue (Patrick) Scurlock Miller; her son, Robert Neal
3(Valerie) Scurlock; her grandchildren, Shawna (Todd) Neihoff,
4Ronald Harris, Nicole (Josh) Rakes, Jesse Starry, Alan Tribe,
5Jayce Parrish, Gabriel Scurlock, Troy Scurlock, and Kaylee
6Scurlock; her great-grandchildren, Michael Davis, Samantha
7Davis, Alexandra Headley, Brantley Rakes, and Elayna Rakes;
8her great-great-grandchildren, Aubrii, Romeo, and Arianna
9Headley; her sister, Nancy Jane (Ernest) Finney; and many
10nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13Rev. Betty Anne Hornback and extend our sincere condolences to
14her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
15further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Betty Hornback as an expression of
18our deepest sympathy.
