SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the deaths of Thomas Francis "Tom" Connelly, Ph.D., who passed away on December 3, 2020, and Ann Louise (Duffy) Connelly, who passed away on November 7, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Tom and Ann Connelly were married for 61 years; and

WHEREAS, Tom Connelly was born on the West Side of Chicago to John and Ann (Rafter) Connelly; he was a long-time resident of La Grange; he earned his bachelor's degree in Classical Studies from Loyola University Chicago; he served in the U.S. Navy in the Navy Submarine Force and was based in Hawaii; he obtained his master's degree in Classics from the University of Kentucky; he earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration from Loyola University Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Tom Connelly worked for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) his entire career; he began teaching Latin at South Shore High School, where he served as the faculty advisor of the award-winning Shoreline newspaper; after passing the principal's exam, he worked in the CPS administration for the remainder of his career; and

WHEREAS, Tom Connelly was passionate about tutoring students in Latin, from his own grandchildren and friends to the undergraduate students at Ave Maria University in Naples, Florida; and

WHEREAS, Ann Connelly was born on the West Side of Chicago; she was a long-time resident of La Grange; she graduated from St. Xaxier University; and

WHEREAS, Ann Connelly was a registered nurse and worked as a school nurse for Chicago Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, Ann Connelly especially enjoyed playing bridge with her college friends from St. Xavier University; she worked tirelessly for her family and at one point had 5 children under the age of 4, with the oldest being 3 1/2 years old; and

WHEREAS, Together, Tom and Ann Connelly enjoyed traveling the world with each other and their many friends; they loved doting on their grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they were deeply committed to their faith, and that faith was central to their love for one another; they will be missed; and

WHEREAS, Tom and Ann Connelly were preceded in death by Tom's brother, Jack; his twin brother, Francis Thomas; his sisters, Catherine and Winifred; Ann's brothers, James and David; and her sister, Mary Spradlin; and

WHEREAS, Tom and Ann Connelly were the parents of Mary (late Jerome) O'Rourke, Thomas (Amanda), Mark (Mary), Maureen (Martin) O'Connor, Michael (Lisa), Timothy (Noreen), and Ann Marie (John) Kavanagh; the grandparents of 23 grandchildren; the great-grandparents of three great-grandchildren; the brother and sister-in-law of Edward; and the loving caretakers of their 4-legged companion, Jesse James; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Thomas Francis "Tom" Connelly, Ph.D. and Ann Louise (Duffy) Connelly and extend our sincere condolences to their family, friends, and all who knew and loved them; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Tom and Ann Connelly as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
