| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Samuel Herman "Sam" Swartzbaugh of |
| 4 | | West Salem, who passed away on March 5, 2021; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Sam Swartzbaugh was born in Bone Gap to Walter |
| 6 | | and Gertrude (Koertge) Swartzbaugh on July 30, 1927; he |
| 7 | | enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945 and served for just |
| 8 | | under a year on the U.S.S. Knoxville, patrolling the |
| 9 | | mid-Atlantic; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Sam Swartzbaugh served in the U.S. Army from 1949 |
| 11 | | to 1972, where he worked as a mechanic, fuel man, crane |
| 12 | | operator, and medical equipment inspector; during his over 23 |
| 13 | | years of service, he spent nearly 18 years overseas and was |
| 14 | | stationed in several countries, including Germany, France, and |
| 15 | | Japan; he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and served two |
| 16 | | tours of duty in Vietnam; after retiring from the Army, he |
| 17 | | relocated his family to West Salem; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, After his retirement from the Army, Sam |
| 19 | | Swartzbaugh worked at Champion Laboratories, attended Olney |
| 20 | | Central College, and also worked as a bus driver for the |
| 21 | | Edwards County School District; and
