| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was | ||||||
| 3 | founded by 22 illustrious college-educated young women on the | ||||||
| 4 | campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in January | ||||||
| 5 | 1913 and is celebrating its 108th anniversary; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Shortly after the founding of Delta Sigma Theta | ||||||
| 7 | Sorority, Inc., the 22 young women participated in the Women's | ||||||
| 8 | Suffrage March and demanded rights for women, including the | ||||||
| 9 | right to vote, which transformed the role of women in the | ||||||
| 10 | democratic process; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an | ||||||
| 12 | organization of college-educated women committed to the | ||||||
| 13 | constructive development of its members through public service | ||||||
| 14 | with a primary focus on the Black community; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, The programs of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. | ||||||
| 16 | are implemented through its Five Point Programmatic Thrust, | ||||||
| 17 | which includes Economic Development, Educational Development, | ||||||
| 18 | Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and | ||||||
| 19 | Involvement, and International Awareness and Involvement; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are | ||||||
| 21 | accomplished corporate, civic, and public officials and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | acclaimed scholars; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a membership | ||||||
| 3 | of more than 350,000 college-educated women in more than 1,020 | ||||||
| 4 | chapters worldwide, of which 25 chapters are located in the | ||||||
| 5 | State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission | ||||||
| 7 | instituted Delta Days in the Nation's Capital as a biennial | ||||||
| 8 | legislative conference to increase member involvement in the | ||||||
| 9 | public policy-making process; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Delta Day at the Illinois State Capitol has | ||||||
| 11 | occurred on an annual basis with members from across the State | ||||||
| 12 | in attendance; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
| 14 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March 10, | ||||||
| 15 | 2021 as Delta Day 2021 in the State of Illinois in recognition | ||||||
| 16 | of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the 2021 theme | ||||||
| 17 | of "Embracing and Elevating the Power In Our Voice"; and be it | ||||||
| 18 | further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a symbol of | ||||||
| 21 | our respect and esteem.
