2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn about the death of Alice "Alicia" G. Hernandez of |
4 | | Waukegan, who passed away on June 4, 2021; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, While raising five young children, Alice |
6 | | Hernandez decided to attend the College of Lake County to earn |
7 | | her associate's degree; she then attended Northeastern |
8 | | University where she earned her bachelor's degree and master's |
9 | | degree while working part time as a lunchroom assistant; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Alice Hernandez became a full-time bilingual and |
11 | | special educational paraprofessional; she worked at North |
12 | | Elementary, Whittier Elementary, Webster Junior High School, |
13 | | and Waukegan East High School between the years of 1975 and |
14 | | 1990; she then worked at the College of Lake County as a |
15 | | student recruiter; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, In the fall of 1991, Alice Hernandez started |
17 | | advising the Latino Club at the College of Lake County; some of |
18 | | the events and activities that the club organized and |
19 | | initiated that are still active today include the Traditional |
20 | | Valentines Flower Sale, the Samuel Lopez Scholarship Dance and |
21 | | Dinner now known as the Alicia Hernandez Scholarship Banquet, |
22 | | participation in the September 16 Waukegan Parade, the annual |

1 | | U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute Conference trip, Hispanic |
2 | | Heritage Month events, hosting Latino speakers, such as Samuel |
3 | | Betances, Chuy Negrete, Carlos Mensilla and others, providing |
4 | | Latino food on campus, Latin dance lessons, organizing food |
5 | | and toy drives for Latinx families, the first Latinx Talent |
6 | | Showcase, college visits, the Day of the Dead celebration, |
7 | | summer camping trips, and volunteer work; she was committed to |
8 | | supporting all of College of the Lake County's Latinx |
9 | | students; she taught students to be proud of their heritage |
10 | | and encouraged them to finish their degrees; she formed a |
11 | | network of students to share important college resources and |
12 | | organize fundraising activities to provide scholarships for |
13 | | Latinx students regardless of immigration status; she provided |
14 | | a welcoming and friendly presence, and her kindness and |
15 | | support encouraged many; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Alice Hernandez loved music and had a special |
17 | | love for Mexican music; she enjoyed going for long rides with |
18 | | her dad, dancing, teaching bilingual classes as well as |
19 | | Catechism Class, encouraging the youth to continue their |
20 | | education, cooking breakfast, being surrounded by family, |
21 | | listening to her husband play the guitar, and going to the |
22 | | Wisconsin Dells with her family; therefore, be it

23 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL |
24 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
