SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn about the death of Alice "Alicia" G. Hernandez of
4Waukegan, who passed away on June 4, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, While raising five young children, Alice
6Hernandez decided to attend the College of Lake County to earn
7her associate's degree; she then attended Northeastern
8University where she earned her bachelor's degree and master's
9degree while working part time as a lunchroom assistant; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Alice Hernandez became a full-time bilingual and
11special educational paraprofessional; she worked at North
12Elementary, Whittier Elementary, Webster Junior High School,
13and Waukegan East High School between the years of 1975 and
141990; she then worked at the College of Lake County as a
15student recruiter; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In the fall of 1991, Alice Hernandez started
17advising the Latino Club at the College of Lake County; some of
18the events and activities that the club organized and
19initiated that are still active today include the Traditional
20Valentines Flower Sale, the Samuel Lopez Scholarship Dance and
21Dinner now known as the Alicia Hernandez Scholarship Banquet,
22participation in the September 16 Waukegan Parade, the annual

1U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute Conference trip, Hispanic
2Heritage Month events, hosting Latino speakers, such as Samuel
3Betances, Chuy Negrete, Carlos Mensilla and others, providing
4Latino food on campus, Latin dance lessons, organizing food
5and toy drives for Latinx families, the first Latinx Talent
6Showcase, college visits, the Day of the Dead celebration,
7summer camping trips, and volunteer work; she was committed to
8supporting all of College of the Lake County's Latinx
9students; she taught students to be proud of their heritage
10and encouraged them to finish their degrees; she formed a
11network of students to share important college resources and
12organize fundraising activities to provide scholarships for
13Latinx students regardless of immigration status; she provided
14a welcoming and friendly presence, and her kindness and
15support encouraged many; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Alice Hernandez loved music and had a special
17love for Mexican music; she enjoyed going for long rides with
18her dad, dancing, teaching bilingual classes as well as
19Catechism Class, encouraging the youth to continue their
20education, cooking breakfast, being surrounded by family,
21listening to her husband play the guitar, and going to the
22Wisconsin Dells with her family; therefore, be it
 
23    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
24ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1Alice "Alicia" G. Hernandez and extend our sincere condolences
2to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be
3it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Alice Hernandez as an expression of
6our deepest sympathy.
