SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Charles "Charlie" E. Smith of Rock
4Island, who passed away on September 7, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Charlie Smith was born to George and Theresa
6(Bernet) Smith on December 22, 1927; he graduated from
7Springfield High School and served in the U.S. Army during
8World War II; he then attended Springfield Community College
9before transferring to St. Louis University, where he
10graduated in 1958; and
 
11    WHEREAS, During college, Charlie Smith joined the FBI as a
12clerk, where he met and married Mary Louise Hunn; after
13graduation, he achieved agent status and shortly thereafter
14transferred to the FBI office in Phoenix; he later served FBI
15tours in Killeen and San Antonio, Texas, in Jackson and
16Columbus, Mississippi, and in Springfield; he then served in
17the Quad Cities office, where he retired as Special Agent in
18Charge in 1980 after 30 years of service; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Charlie Smith received much recognition for his
20service with the FBI; most notably, he received special
21recognition from then FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover for taking
22part in apprehending an FBI Top Ten Fugitive in Phoenix; and

1    WHEREAS, In retirement, Charlie Smith enjoyed collecting
2coins, arts and crafts, bird watching, growing roses, and
3eating breakfast at Cracker Barrel; above all, he enjoyed
4spending time with his family; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Charlie Smith was preceded in death by his
6parents; his brothers, Edward, Robert, David, Albert, George,
7and Walter Smith; and his sister, Frances Ries; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Charlie Smith is survived by his children,
9Kathryn (William) Fey, Carolyn (Kevin) Puebla, Charles David
10(Christine) Smith, Michael (Christine) Smith, and Thomas
11(Lucy) Smith; his 13 grandchildren; his 13
12great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Barb Smith; and his
13nephews, Mathew and Patrick Smith; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Charles "Charlie" E. Smith and extend our sincere condolences
17to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
18it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Charlie Smith as an expression of
21our deepest sympathy.
