| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Paul Francis Schafer of Springfield, |
| 4 | | who passed away on September 5, 2021; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was born in Detroit, Michigan on |
| 6 | | December 3, 1962; he was the son of Donald and Margaret Madigan |
| 7 | | Schafer; he graduated from Central Catholic High School; he |
| 8 | | earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting from Illinois State |
| 9 | | University, where he dabbled in college football; he married |
| 10 | | Marie K. "Katie" Kerner in Bloomington on June 15, 1984; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was a certified public accountant |
| 12 | | (CPA) and a co-founding partner of Eck, Schafer & Punke, LLP; |
| 13 | | he was known for always betting on himself, believing in his |
| 14 | | abilities, and trusting his partners; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Alongside his wife Katie, Paul Schafer co-founded |
| 16 | | The Fat Ass 5K & Street Party for Charity, an idea that was |
| 17 | | borne out of a resolve to contribute following his sister |
| 18 | | Mary's diagnosis of multiple sclerosis; through their charity, |
| 19 | | over $1.5 million has been donated in Mary's honor and memory |
| 20 | | since 2008; his most trusted friends and family will carry on |
| 21 | | his legacy; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was a member of Blessed Sacrament |
| 2 | | Church; he was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan, sneaking into radio |
| 3 | | booths, serving as a peanut vendor for one day at Wrigley |
| 4 | | Stadium, and witnessing the Cubs' Game 7 World Series victory |
| 5 | | with his son Patrick; he was a scorned Detroit Lions fan; he |
| 6 | | enjoyed sharing adventures with his wife as they took turns |
| 7 | | surprising each other with vacation destinations; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was known for his legendary |
| 9 | | kindness, compassion, humor, bravery, and perseverance; he was |
| 10 | | a loving husband, a dedicated father, and a loyal friend; he |
| 11 | | enjoyed thoroughly embarrassing his family, especially his |
| 12 | | children, while also motivating, challenging, and encouraging |
| 13 | | them every day; he led by example, especially through his last |
| 14 | | days; he will be dearly missed; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was preceded in death by his |
| 16 | | parents; his sister, Mary; and his brother-in-law, Doug; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Paul Schafer is survived by his wife, Katie |
| 18 | | Schafer; his children, Christopher (Ashley) Schafer, Patrick |
| 19 | | (Kaitlin) Schafer, Daniel Schafer (Emily Ackerman), and Molly |
| 20 | | Schafer; his grandchildren, Louise "Lou", Max, and Frankie |
| 21 | | Schafer; his sister, Kathy (Doug) Thomas; his brothers, Gerald |
| 22 | | (Brenda) Schafer and Tim Schafer; his uncle, Butch Schafer; |
| 23 | | and his several nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL |
| 2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 3 | | Paul Francis Schafer and extend our sincere condolences to his |
| 4 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
| 5 | | further
|
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 7 | | presented to the family of Paul Schafer as an expression of our |
| 8 | | deepest sympathy.
