| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Melvin H. Matter of Minonk, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on October 21, 2021; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was born to Herman and Rosina | ||||||
6 | (Gastmann) Matter in Woodford on June 29, 1926; he started | ||||||
7 | school at Dixie Grade School in Paulding, Ohio; after the | ||||||
8 | family moved back to Illinois, he attended Center Country | ||||||
9 | School in Groveland Township and graduated from Rutland High | ||||||
10 | School in 1944; he served in the U.S. Army during World War II | ||||||
11 | in the 3rd Engineer Combat Battalion, 24th Infantry Division | ||||||
12 | and was stationed in Kokura, Japan; he married Phyllis M. | ||||||
13 | Voigts in Ransom on March 1, 1953, and they lived in rural Dana | ||||||
14 | until retirement, when they moved to Minonk; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, After graduating from high school, Melvin Matter | ||||||
16 | went into farming; upon his return from the Army, he farmed in | ||||||
17 | the Rutland/Dana area; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Melvin Matter served as the Groveland Township | ||||||
19 | Clerk from 1977 to 1997; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was actively involved in his | ||||||
21 | community; he served on the LaSalle County Farm Bureau Board |

1 | and the Minonk-Dana-Rutland School Board and was Precinct | ||||||
2 | Committeeman in LaSalle and Woodford Counties; he taught | ||||||
3 | Sunday School for over 30 years and served on the Church | ||||||
4 | Council for 14 years at St. Paul's Church in Minonk; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was an active member of Minonk | ||||||
6 | American Legion Post 142, where he served as commander; he | ||||||
7 | helped coordinate many Memorial Day and Veteran's Day Services | ||||||
8 | and was an advocate for veterans; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was a man of great character and | ||||||
10 | wisdom; he enjoyed having conversations with everyone he met; | ||||||
11 | he rode his bicycle around Minonk, danced, and played cards | ||||||
12 | until his passing; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was preceded in death by his | ||||||
14 | parents and his wife; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Melvin Matter is survived by his two daughters, | ||||||
16 | Judith Matter and Janis (Brent) Hamer; his two grandchildren, | ||||||
17 | John and Carolyn Megow; his brother, Raymond Matter; and his | ||||||
18 | sister, Dorothy Kuhl; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Melvin H. Matter and extend our sincere condolences to his |

1 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
2 | further
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
4 | presented to the family of Melvin Matter as an expression of | ||||||
