2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Joseph "Joe" S. DePaepe of Henderson, | ||||||
4 | Nevada and St. Charles; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Joe DePaepe was born to August A. and Bertie | ||||||
6 | (Andrews) DePaepe on May 16, 1946; he graduated from Rock | ||||||
7 | Island High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy while still a | ||||||
8 | student; after graduation, he was assigned as a qualified | ||||||
9 | Helmsman in the Navigation Department of the U.S.S. Enterprise | ||||||
10 | CVA (N)65, which at the time was the world's largest warship | ||||||
11 | and the only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier during the | ||||||
12 | Vietnam War; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, As a teenager, Joe DePaepe set up dances at local | ||||||
14 | churches and performed as "J.D. the D.J." for dances at the | ||||||
15 | Memri Drive-In Theater in Milan; upon returning from Vietnam, | ||||||
16 | he became co-owner and operator of the Falcon Press in Rock | ||||||
17 | Island, which later became the Falcon Printing and Publishing | ||||||
18 | Company; he was a real estate investor and owner and operator | ||||||
19 | of the tavern and restaurant Jumpin' Jacks in Rock Island; in | ||||||
20 | 1984, he opened the first of his own chain of convenience | ||||||
21 | stores and gas stations, Mother Hubbard's Cupboards, which | ||||||
22 | grew to 18 locations throughout the Quad City area; he was the | ||||||
23 | owner/developer of Smokin' Joe's Tobacco & Liquor Outlets, |

1 | with 20 locations throughout the State of Iowa; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Joe DePaepe was a proud lifetime member of the | ||||||
3 | Henderson, Nevada, Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW Post 12101; he | ||||||
4 | also had a close relationship with the Walcott, Iowa, American | ||||||
5 | Legion Post 548; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Joe DePaepe loved fishing, snorkeling, collecting | ||||||
7 | vintage cars, the Chicago Bears, dogs, and a good cigar; he was | ||||||
8 | an excellent dancer and a gifted oil painter and sculptor; he | ||||||
9 | thrived on adventure and traveled worldwide, from fishing for | ||||||
10 | piranha in Peru to riding camels in Egypt; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Joe DePaepe was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
12 | his brother; and his sister; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Joe DePaepe is survived by his wife, Sherry; his | ||||||
14 | daughter, Casey; his granddaughter, Kierney; his stepdaughter, | ||||||
15 | Kelly (Jim) Mason; his niece, Victoria Coutts and her family; | ||||||
16 | and a special man he loved like a son, Tony Gripp; therefore, | ||||||
17 | be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Joseph "Joe" S. DePaepe and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
21 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
