2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Joseph "Joe" Miller Jr. of Maywood, |
4 | | who passed away on March 6, 2020; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller was born to Joseph Miller Sr. and Anne |
6 | | Dorsey in Chicago on May 9, 1949; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller's soaring intellect enabled him to |
8 | | skip a grade and graduate from Crane High School in 1966 at 16 |
9 | | years of age; as the years went on, he kept in touch with |
10 | | childhood friends from Chicago's Westside; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, One such friend, author Mark Boone, sought Joe |
12 | | Miller's advice on a manuscript for a novel, which was later |
13 | | published as Reunion; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller married Mary Frances Hamer on August |
15 | | 31, 1968, and their union lasted 51 years; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller earned a Bachelor of Science in |
17 | | Business Administration from Roosevelt University; he |
18 | | instilled the importance of education in his children whose |
19 | | professional accomplishments include partner status at a law |
20 | | firm and serving in the position of Head of Diversity and |
|

1 | | Inclusion at Ferrara Candy; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller worked at Chicago and North Western |
3 | | Railroad for 25 years until a 1995 acquisition by Union |
4 | | Pacific; he then turned his attention to real estate as a |
5 | | licensed agent and appraiser; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller gladly lent his professional expertise |
7 | | to family members once they decided to purchase their first |
8 | | homes; he even taught a course in real estate appraisal at |
9 | | Triton College in River Grove; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller was a dedicated telephile and |
11 | | cinephile; his top ten picks included Breaking Bad, Criminal |
12 | | Minds, Empire, Game of Thrones, The Good, the Bad, and the |
13 | | Ugly, Power, Pulp Fiction, Sanford & Son, The Witcher, and |
14 | | Tombstone; and

15 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller's capacity for strategic thinking |
16 | | enabled him to excel in games of chess and solitaire, and he |
17 | | passed these playing skills to his children and grandchildren; |
18 | | and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, One of Joe Miller's favorite clothing accessories |
20 | | was a gentleman's cap, which he sometimes color coordinated |
21 | | with outfits; and
|

1 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller was always open and willing to give |
2 | | life advice to those who sought it; his answers were usually |
3 | | prefaced by the phrase "If I were you"; his quotes were classic |
4 | | and sometimes humorous, and he always elicited respect from |
5 | | his audience; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller's favorite vacation destination was |
7 | | Las Vegas; he visited the city almost every year after his 20th |
8 | | wedding anniversary; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller was preceded in death by his parents, |
10 | | Joseph Sr. and Anne, and his sister, Patricia; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Joe Miller, who was affectionately known as Papa |
12 | | Joe and Uncle Joe, is survived by his wife, Mary Frances; his |
13 | | stepmother, Marian; his children, Tobi, Joseph III (Lynne), |
14 | | and Natasha (Jamel); his sister, TaLana (Harry); his |
15 | | grandchildren, Evan, Sebastian, Jalen, Andrew, and Shawn; and |
16 | | his countless adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; |
17 | | therefore, be it |
18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL |
19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
20 | | Joseph "Joe" Miller Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to |
21 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
