SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Today, there are an estimated 19 million veterans
3in the United States, and more than 720,000 of them live in
4Illinois, with the oldest having served in World War II; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Since the founding of the United States, 50
6million Americans have served in the U.S. military in some
7capacity; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Some soldiers never return home and may be
9classified as Prisoners of War (POW), Missing in Action (MIA),
10or Died in Captivity (DIC); and
 
11    WHEREAS, Currently, an estimated 81,600 American service
12personnel are still considered MIA, of which 4,152 were from
13Illinois; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The mission of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting
15Agency (DPAA) is to recover fallen Americans and provide the
16fullest possible accounting for missing personnel to their
17families and the nation; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Many of those classified as POW, MIA, or DIC are
19never given a proper burial, and many lie in unmarked graves
20across the world; and

1    WHEREAS, The United States has always striven to ensure
2that every soldier be returned home and continues to search
3for and find fallen soldiers from past wars; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September
616, 2022 as POW/MIA Recognition Day in the State of Illinois as
7a day of remembrance to honor those who bravely served their
8country and never returned home; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That we support the priority of the United
10States to bring every fallen service member home.
