| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
| 3 | to learn of the death of Edward P. "Coach" Galvin, who passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on September 18, 2021 at the age of 88; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was born to Irish immigrants Tom and | ||||||
| 6 | Molly (Herlihy) Galvin in Chicago on February 6, 1933; he was | ||||||
| 7 | raised on the West Side of Chicago; he graduated from St. | ||||||
| 8 | Philip High School in 1951; he earned his Bachelor of Science | ||||||
| 9 | in Physical Education from Loyola University in New Orleans; | ||||||
| 10 | during his college basketball career, he set scoring and | ||||||
| 11 | rebound records, earned the title of Loyola Wolf Pack's most | ||||||
| 12 | valuable player for 3 consecutive years, and was named a | ||||||
| 13 | member of Collier Magazine's All-American Basketball Team; he | ||||||
| 14 | was selected during the 1955 NBA draft by the Syracuse | ||||||
| 15 | Nationals, now the Philadelphia 76ers; he served in the U.S. | ||||||
| 16 | Army Military Police from 1955 to 1957; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Ed Galvin began his basketball coaching career as | ||||||
| 18 | an assistant at St. Philip High School; he spent 3 years with | ||||||
| 19 | the team before becoming head coach at St. Rita High School; | ||||||
| 20 | while there, he led the Mustangs to immediate and | ||||||
| 21 | unprecedented Catholic League basketball success with 232 wins | ||||||
| 22 | in six seasons, which included one heavyweight and two | ||||||
| 23 | lightweight league championships; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Ed Galvin joined the Fenwick High School coaching | ||||||
| 2 | staff in 1969; he was recruited to be the fourth head | ||||||
| 3 | basketball coach in the team's history and succeeded coaching | ||||||
| 4 | legend Bill Shay in 1970; he coached the Fenwick Friars to two | ||||||
| 5 | Chicago Catholic League Lightweight titles over the next 10 | ||||||
| 6 | years; during his tenure, he oversaw the Friars becoming the | ||||||
| 7 | first team to win three consecutive Fenwick Christmas | ||||||
| 8 | Lightweight Tournament Championships in the famed sporting | ||||||
| 9 | event's 34-year history; he was voted the Chicago Catholic | ||||||
| 10 | League Coach of the Year for all sports in 1971; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was the first head men's basketball | ||||||
| 12 | coach at Rosary College, now Dominican University, from 1976 | ||||||
| 13 | to 1978; after he departed Fenwick High School, he continued | ||||||
| 14 | his stint as a college basketball coach at North Central | ||||||
| 15 | College from 1980 to 1982; his final coaching destination was | ||||||
| 16 | at the Illinois Math and Science Academy from 1988 to 1997; | ||||||
| 17 | over the course of his 40-year coaching career, his players | ||||||
| 18 | won more than 600 games; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Ed Galvin additionally served as athletic | ||||||
| 20 | director at St. Rita High School, Fenwick High School, Rosary | ||||||
| 21 | College, and North Central College; he also supplemented his | ||||||
| 22 | income through working first as a trader at the Chicago | ||||||
| 23 | Mercantile Exchange and then Galvin Marketing, which he | ||||||

| 1 | co-founded; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was inducted into multiple player and | ||||||
| 3 | coach halls of fame, including the Chicago Catholic League, | ||||||
| 4 | Chicagoland Sports, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, | ||||||
| 5 | St. Rita High School, and Loyola University New Orleans | ||||||
| 6 | Athletics; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was most proud of his family; he | ||||||
| 8 | enjoyed golfing, singing Irish tunes, telling Irish jokes, and | ||||||
| 9 | spending time with family; he will be remembered for his | ||||||
| 10 | welcoming smile and quick Irish wit; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Ed Galvin was | ||||||
| 12 | survived by his wife of 62 years, Eileen (Day); his six | ||||||
| 13 | daughters, Peggy (Bill) O'Reilly, Maripat (Rick) Wooliver, | ||||||
| 14 | Eileen (John) Healy, Kathy (Rick) Dasko, Joanne (Joe) | ||||||
| 15 | Siciliano, and Tracy (Dan) Welsh; his 18 grandchildren; and | ||||||
| 16 | his six great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
| 18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 19 | Edward P. "Coach" Galvin and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
| 20 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
| 21 | further
