SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Edward P. "Coach" Galvin, who passed
4away on September 18, 2021 at the age of 88; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was born to Irish immigrants Tom and
6Molly (Herlihy) Galvin in Chicago on February 6, 1933; he was
7raised on the West Side of Chicago; he graduated from St.
8Philip High School in 1951; he earned his Bachelor of Science
9in Physical Education from Loyola University in New Orleans;
10during his college basketball career, he set scoring and
11rebound records, earned the title of Loyola Wolf Pack's most
12valuable player for 3 consecutive years, and was named a
13member of Collier Magazine's All-American Basketball Team; he
14was selected during the 1955 NBA draft by the Syracuse
15Nationals, now the Philadelphia 76ers; he served in the U.S.
16Army Military Police from 1955 to 1957; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Ed Galvin began his basketball coaching career as
18an assistant at St. Philip High School; he spent 3 years with
19the team before becoming head coach at St. Rita High School;
20while there, he led the Mustangs to immediate and
21unprecedented Catholic League basketball success with 232 wins
22in six seasons, which included one heavyweight and two
23lightweight league championships; and

1    WHEREAS, Ed Galvin joined the Fenwick High School coaching
2staff in 1969; he was recruited to be the fourth head
3basketball coach in the team's history and succeeded coaching
4legend Bill Shay in 1970; he coached the Fenwick Friars to two
5Chicago Catholic League Lightweight titles over the next 10
6years; during his tenure, he oversaw the Friars becoming the
7first team to win three consecutive Fenwick Christmas
8Lightweight Tournament Championships in the famed sporting
9event's 34-year history; he was voted the Chicago Catholic
10League Coach of the Year for all sports in 1971; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was the first head men's basketball
12coach at Rosary College, now Dominican University, from 1976
13to 1978; after he departed Fenwick High School, he continued
14his stint as a college basketball coach at North Central
15College from 1980 to 1982; his final coaching destination was
16at the Illinois Math and Science Academy from 1988 to 1997;
17over the course of his 40-year coaching career, his players
18won more than 600 games; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Ed Galvin additionally served as athletic
20director at St. Rita High School, Fenwick High School, Rosary
21College, and North Central College; he also supplemented his
22income through working first as a trader at the Chicago
23Mercantile Exchange and then Galvin Marketing, which he

1co-founded; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was inducted into multiple player and
3coach halls of fame, including the Chicago Catholic League,
4Chicagoland Sports, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association,
5St. Rita High School, and Loyola University New Orleans
6Athletics; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ed Galvin was most proud of his family; he
8enjoyed golfing, singing Irish tunes, telling Irish jokes, and
9spending time with family; he will be remembered for his
10welcoming smile and quick Irish wit; and
 
11    WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Ed Galvin was
12survived by his wife of 62 years, Eileen (Day); his six
13daughters, Peggy (Bill) O'Reilly, Maripat (Rick) Wooliver,
14Eileen (John) Healy, Kathy (Rick) Dasko, Joanne (Joe)
15Siciliano, and Tracy (Dan) Welsh; his 18 grandchildren; and
16his six great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Edward P. "Coach" Galvin and extend our sincere condolences to
20his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
