| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
| 3 | to learn of the death of John Richard "Dick" Schofield of | ||||||
| 4 | Springfield, who passed away on July 11, 2022; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Dick Schofield was born to John and Florence | ||||||
| 6 | (Campbell) Schofield in Springfield on January 7, 1935; he | ||||||
| 7 | spent the majority of his life in Springfield; he attended | ||||||
| 8 | Harvard Park Grade School and could often be found playing | ||||||
| 9 | baseball with his friends at Lincoln Park; he graduated from | ||||||
| 10 | Springfield High School in 1953; he married Donna Jean Dabney | ||||||
| 11 | in Omaha, Nebraska on June 16, 1956, and she preceded him in | ||||||
| 12 | death on November 8, 2012; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Dick Schofield, who came to be known as "Ducky", | ||||||
| 14 | embarked on his career with Major League Baseball after | ||||||
| 15 | graduating from high school; he was the first bonus baby, an | ||||||
| 16 | amateur player who received a signing bonus and went straight | ||||||
| 17 | to the Major Leagues, hired by the St. Louis Cardinals in July | ||||||
| 18 | 1953; he played in the major leagues for a total of 19 seasons | ||||||
| 19 | with a number of teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, the | ||||||
| 20 | San Francisco Giants, the New York Yankees, the L.A. Dodgers, | ||||||
| 21 | the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Boston Red Sox; during his | ||||||
| 22 | tenure, he had the honor and privilege of playing in two World | ||||||
| 23 | Series; he was a member of the 1960 World Champion Pittsburgh | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | Pirates, during which he played a pivotal role in capturing | ||||||
| 2 | the National League pennant that same year, and his second | ||||||
| 3 | World Series appearance was while playing for the St. Louis | ||||||
| 4 | Cardinals in 1968; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Dick Schofield held other responsibilities when | ||||||
| 6 | he was not playing baseball or helping raise his family, | ||||||
| 7 | including becoming the all-time quarterback for the Circle | ||||||
| 8 | Drive neighborhood football games; he enjoyed playing | ||||||
| 9 | basketball, playing cards with his friends, and golfing; he | ||||||
| 10 | was also passionate about working in the yard, and he | ||||||
| 11 | especially enjoyed landscaping and mowing the grass; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Dick Schofield was known for being an intense, | ||||||
| 13 | successful, and dedicated athlete and a very giving and kind | ||||||
| 14 | individual; he helped many people during his lifetime and | ||||||
| 15 | never expected anything in return; most importantly, he was | ||||||
| 16 | extremely proud of his family; he enjoyed cheering for his | ||||||
| 17 | children and grandchildren during their many sporting events | ||||||
| 18 | and activities; he especially loved to watch his son, Dick, | ||||||
| 19 | play baseball over the years; he will be remembered for his | ||||||
| 20 | passion for baseball and for making his family, friends, and | ||||||
| 21 | Springfield proud; and
| ||||||
| 22 | WHEREAS, Dick Schofield was preceded in death by his | ||||||
| 23 | daughter, Tami Schofield, and his parents; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Dick Schofield is survived by his son, Dick | ||||||
| 2 | Schofield; his daughter, Kim (Dennis) Werth; his | ||||||
| 3 | grandchildren, Jayson (Julia) Werth, Hillary (Morgan) Werth, | ||||||
| 4 | Hannah Werth, Haley (Chad Oldridge) Whitehurst, Gracie (Al) | ||||||
| 5 | Werth, Hank Schofield, Hayden Schofield, and Millie Schofield; | ||||||
| 6 | and his great-grandchildren, Jackson Werth, Judah Werth, Pyper | ||||||
| 7 | Oldridge, Audrey Oldridge, and Riley Schofield; therefore, be | ||||||
| 8 | it

| 9 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
| 10 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 11 | John Richard "Dick" Schofield and extend our sincere | ||||||
| 12 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 13 | him; and be it further

| 14 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 15 | presented to the family of Dick Schofield as an expression of | ||||||
| 16 | our deepest sympathy.
