|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of Michael A. Hurt of Jacksonville, who |
4 | | passed away on September 14, 2022; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Michael Hurt was born to Gerald Allen and Helen |
6 | | Louise Ulrey Hurt in Terre Haute, Indiana on September 17, |
7 | | 1948; he married Peggy Lee "Jamsie" Waldron in Norwalk, |
8 | | Connecticut on November 26, 1975; he graduated from Eastern |
9 | | Illinois University (EIU) in Charleston; he later earned his |
10 | | MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Michael Hurt taught at Petersburg Porta High |
12 | | School until he joined the Abraham Lincoln Council of the Boy |
13 | | Scouts of America as a district executive for the Honest Abe |
14 | | District; he left professional scouting to serve as the |
15 | | executive director for JAARC/Pathway School from 1973 to 1984; |
16 | | during this time, he spearheaded the construction of their |
17 | | first building on South West Street in Jacksonville; later in |
18 | | 1984, he joined the Illinois Department of Mental Health and |
19 | | Developmental Disabilities and was named the superintendent |
20 | | for the Jacksonville Developmental Center, where he served for |
21 | | many years; prior to his retirement, he served as the deputy |
22 | | director of the Illinois Department of Mental Health and |
23 | | Developmental Disabilities, spending much of his efforts |

1 | | traveling Illinois to inspect and improve mental health |
2 | | facilities; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, In past years, Michael Hurt was active with Grace |
4 | | United Methodist Church, First Christian Church, and Lincoln |
5 | | Avenue Baptist Church; he was committed to numerous mission |
6 | | trips to Haiti, Africa, and the Dominican Republic through the |
7 | | In His Service organization, where he served as a dedicated |
8 | | board member; he also served as a board chair and director at |
9 | | Passavant Area Hospital, a volunteer scouter, and an Elks |
10 | | Little League volunteer; he was a former member of the |
11 | | Jacksonville Kiwanis, the Jacksonville AMBUCS, and the |
12 | | Jacksonville Elks Lodge; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Michael Hurt enjoyed riding motorcycles with |
14 | | friends if it meant stopping for ice cream; he loved playing |
15 | | card games with friends, rooting for the Illini football and |
16 | | basketball teams, country line dancing, catching the late |
17 | | movie at a local theater, going on long drives with his golden |
18 | | retriever, Marmalade, working in his yard, eating fried fish |
19 | | at dive bars, following Crimsons basketball, and taking |
20 | | last-minute road trips to Busch Stadium followed by purchasing |
21 | | some White Castle cheeseburgers for the ride home; he was |
22 | | proud to own a condo in Costa Rica; and
|
23 | | WHEREAS, Michael Hurt is survived by his wife; his |

1 | | children, Amy (Stuart) Rivers, Matthew (Toni) Hurt, and Kyla |
2 | | Hurt; his grandchildren, Jacob Rivers, Isabella Rivers, |
3 | | Brandon Hurt, Maycee Hurt, and Finnigan Hurt; his sisters, |
4 | | Carole (John) Brandenberg and Becky (Bob) White; and his |
5 | | several nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
|
6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL |
7 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
|
8 | | Michael A. Hurt and extend our sincere
condolences to his |
9 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved
him; and be it |
10 | | further

11 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
|
12 | | presented to the family of Michael Hurt as an expression of
our |
13 | | deepest sympathy.
