SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Michael A. Hurt of Jacksonville, who
4passed away on September 14, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Michael Hurt was born to Gerald Allen and Helen
6Louise Ulrey Hurt in Terre Haute, Indiana on September 17,
71948; he married Peggy Lee "Jamsie" Waldron in Norwalk,
8Connecticut on November 26, 1975; he graduated from Eastern
9Illinois University (EIU) in Charleston; he later earned his
10MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Michael Hurt taught at Petersburg Porta High
12School until he joined the Abraham Lincoln Council of the Boy
13Scouts of America as a district executive for the Honest Abe
14District; he left professional scouting to serve as the
15executive director for JAARC/Pathway School from 1973 to 1984;
16during this time, he spearheaded the construction of their
17first building on South West Street in Jacksonville; later in
181984, he joined the Illinois Department of Mental Health and
19Developmental Disabilities and was named the superintendent
20for the Jacksonville Developmental Center, where he served for
21many years; prior to his retirement, he served as the deputy
22director of the Illinois Department of Mental Health and
23Developmental Disabilities, spending much of his efforts

1traveling Illinois to inspect and improve mental health
2facilities; and
 
3    WHEREAS, In past years, Michael Hurt was active with Grace
4United Methodist Church, First Christian Church, and Lincoln
5Avenue Baptist Church; he was committed to numerous mission
6trips to Haiti, Africa, and the Dominican Republic through the
7In His Service organization, where he served as a dedicated
8board member; he also served as a board chair and director at
9Passavant Area Hospital, a volunteer scouter, and an Elks
10Little League volunteer; he was a former member of the
11Jacksonville Kiwanis, the Jacksonville AMBUCS, and the
12Jacksonville Elks Lodge; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Michael Hurt enjoyed riding motorcycles with
14friends if it meant stopping for ice cream; he loved playing
15card games with friends, rooting for the Illini football and
16basketball teams, country line dancing, catching the late
17movie at a local theater, going on long drives with his golden
18retriever, Marmalade, working in his yard, eating fried fish
19at dive bars, following Crimsons basketball, and taking
20last-minute road trips to Busch Stadium followed by purchasing
21some White Castle cheeseburgers for the ride home; he was
22proud to own a condo in Costa Rica; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Michael Hurt is survived by his wife; his

1children, Amy (Stuart) Rivers, Matthew (Toni) Hurt, and Kyla
2Hurt; his grandchildren, Jacob Rivers, Isabella Rivers,
3Brandon Hurt, Maycee Hurt, and Finnigan Hurt; his sisters,
4Carole (John) Brandenberg and Becky (Bob) White; and his
5several nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Michael A. Hurt and extend our sincere condolences to his
9family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Michael Hurt as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
