AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 1726 

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 1726 by replacing 
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by changing 
5Section 2-5019 as follows:
 
6    (55 ILCS 5/2-5019)
7    Sec. 2-5019. Speaker of the county board.  
8    (a) The county board shall, at its first meeting in the 
9month following the month in which county board members are 
10elected, choose one of its members as speaker for a term of 2 
11years.
12    (b) A speaker may be removed, with or without cause, upon a 
13motion adopted by an affirmative vote of four-fifths of the 
14county board. Upon adoption of a motion to remove the speaker: 
15(i) the speaker position becomes vacant and the former 
16speaker's compensation shall be prorated to the date the

1motion was approved; and (ii) a new speaker shall be elected at 
2the next regularly scheduled county board meeting. A speaker 
3removed under this Section maintains his or her status as a 
4member of the county board. 
5    (c) The speaker may appoint a person to serve as legal 
6counsel for the county board members at an annual salary no 
7greater than the annual salary of the State's Attorney of the 
8county.
