SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
New Act
815 ILCS 505/2EEEE new
    Creates the Gas Stove Labeling Act. Provides that no person shall sell, attempt to sell, or offer to sell to a consumer in the State a gas stove that is manufactured on or after January 1, 2025 unless a label on the gas stove bears a specified message. Provides that manufacturers or importers shall affix adhesive labels to the gas stove in a position that is easily read by a consumer examining the product. Provides that the label must be in a type size no smaller than the largest type size used for other consumer information on the product. Provides that a violation of any of the provisions of the Act is an unlawful practice under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act. Provides that all remedies, penalties, and authority granted to the Attorney General by the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act shall be available to him or her for the enforcement of the Act. Amends the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act to make a conforming change.

1    AN ACT concerning business.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the Gas 
5Stove Labeling Act.
 
6    Section 5. Definition. As used in this Act, "gas stove" 
7means a household natural gas stove or range that is used for 
8food preparation and provides at least one of the following 
9functions:
10        (1) surface cooking;
11        (2) oven cooking; or
12        (3) broiling.
 
13    Section 10. Gas stove labeling requirements. No person 
14shall sell, attempt to sell, or offer to sell to a consumer in 
15this State a gas stove that is manufactured on or after January 
161, 2025 unless a label on the gas stove bears the message:
17        WARNING: Gas stoves can release nitrogen dioxide and 
18    carbon monoxide inside homes at levels exceeding the 
19    Environmental Protection Agency's standards for outdoor 
20    air quality. The presence of these pollutants may 
21    exacerbate pre-existing respiratory illnesses or lead to 
22    the development of asthma, especially in children. Gas

1    powered stoves should never be used without a ducted vent 
2    hood to reduce exposure to these emissions.
3    Manufacturers or importers shall affix adhesive labels to 
4the gas stove in a position that is easily read by a consumer 
5examining the product. The label must be in a type size no 
6smaller than the largest type size used for other consumer 
7information on the product.
 
8    Section 15. Enforcement by Attorney General. A violation 
9of any of the provisions of this Act is an unlawful practice 
10under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act. 
11All remedies, penalties, and authority granted to the Attorney 
12General by that Act shall be available to him or her for the 
13enforcement of this Act.
 
14    Section 90. The Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business 
15Practices Act is amended by adding Section 2EEEE as follows:
 
16    (815 ILCS 505/2EEEE new)
17    Sec. 2EEEE. Violations of the Gas Stove Labeling Act. A 
18person who violates the Gas Stove Labeling Act commits an 
19unlawful practice within the meaning of this Act.
