| 1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, Donald Stephens was born in Chicago on March 13, | ||||||
| 3 | 1928; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Donald Stephens was the first village president | ||||||
| 5 | (mayor) of Rosemont; he was first elected in 1956 and | ||||||
| 6 | re-elected until his death on April 18, 2007; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Prior to the village of Rosemont's incorporation, | ||||||
| 8 | Donald Stephens was the president of the homeowner's | ||||||
| 9 | association of the neighborhood that later became Rosemont; | ||||||
| 10 | and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Donald Stephens was believed to be the | ||||||
| 12 | longest-serving mayor in the United States at the time of his | ||||||
| 13 | passing; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, During Donald Stephens' tenure as mayor, the | ||||||
| 15 | village of Rosemont grew from a community of only 85 people to | ||||||
| 16 | become one of Illinois' most influential communities with over | ||||||
| 17 | 4,000 residents as well as the nation's tenth-largest | ||||||
| 18 | convention center, properly named after Donald Stephens; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Donald Stephens oversaw the construction of the | ||||||
| 20 | 18,500 seat Allstate Arena and the Rosemont Theatre; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Donald Stephens was an avid collector of Hummel | ||||||
| 2 | figurines and established a museum holding his collection in | ||||||
| 3 | Rosemont; the Donald E. Stephens Museum of Hummels claims to | ||||||
| 4 | be the largest public display of Hummel figurines in the | ||||||
| 5 | world; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 7 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
| 8 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the Balmoral | ||||||
| 9 | Avenue Bridge over Interstate 294 as the "Donald Stephens | ||||||
| 10 | Memorial Bridge"; and be it further | ||||||
| 11 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Toll Highway Authority is | ||||||
| 12 | requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
| 13 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
| 14 | giving notice of the name "Donald Stephens Memorial Bridge"; | ||||||
| 15 | and be it further

| 16 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 17 | presented to the family of Donald Stephens and the Executive | ||||||
| 18 | Director of the Illinois Toll Highway Authority.
