HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate Briana Morales on being 
4named the 2023 Illinois Teacher of the Year by the Illinois 
5State Board of Education (ISBE); and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, In the seventh grade, one of Briana Morales's 
7teachers taught her coping skills and how to process pain 
8through writing poetry, which inspired her to pursue a career 
9in education; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Briana Morales received her Bachelor of Arts in 
11English Teacher Education from St. Ambrose University and her 
12Master of Education from the American College of Education; 
13she is currently working on completing her Doctor of Education 
14through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and
  
 
15    WHEREAS, Briana Morales has taught at the Gordon Bush 
16Alternative Center in East St. Louis School District 189 since 
172018, inspiring her students while leading instruction in 
18English and African American literature; and
  
 
19    WHEREAS, Briana Morales serves as a national senior 
20research fellow with Teach Plus, where she focuses on 
21advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion for students; and

1    WHEREAS, In 2019, Briana Morales co-directed a student-led 
2initiative to teach nonviolence principles to youth in the 
3Orr-Weathers housing development, supporting her teen leaders 
4to earn a national certification as Peace Warriors; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Briana Morales is an active member of her 
6community and a caring foster parent to a 16 year old; 
7therefore, be it
  
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
9HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
10we congratulate Briana Morales on being named the 2023 
11Illinois Teacher of the Year by the Illinois State Board of 
12Education (ISBE); and be it further
  
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
14presented to Briana Morales as an expression of our esteem and 
15respect.
