2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to recognize Loyola University Chicago, |
4 | | the only Jesuit Catholic University in the State of Illinois; |
5 | | and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago originally opened its |
7 | | doors as St. Ignatius College on September 5, 1870; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's School of Law opened |
9 | | in 1908, admitting both women and men; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of |
11 | | Medicine was founded in 1920; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago, initially having no |
13 | | home field for its football team, adopted the nickname |
14 | | "Ramblers" for all of its athletic teams in 1926; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago opened Arrupe College, |
16 | | an innovative two-year college for Chicago-area students with |
17 | | limited financial means, in the fall of 2015; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago additionally includes |
19 | | the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, the |

1 | | Niehoff School of Nursing, the Quinlan School of Business, the |
2 | | College of Arts & Sciences, and the Schools of Education, |
3 | | Social Work, and Communications; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, Today, Loyola University Chicago enrolls more |
5 | | than 17,000 students seeking undergraduate, graduate, and |
6 | | professional degrees, with 42% of its study body being |
7 | | students of color and 98% of its undergraduate students |
8 | | receiving grants and/or scholarships; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago had 2,418 students |
10 | | receive a Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) grant in 2023, |
11 | | more than one-half of all Illinois undergraduates attending |
12 | | the university; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago inaugurated Mark C. |
14 | | Reed, Ed.D., as its 25th president on November 3, 2022; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed has been a distinguished |
16 | | leader and educator at Jesuit institutions for more than 20 |
17 | | years, previously serving as president of St. Joseph's |
18 | | University in Pennsylvania for seven years and holding several |
19 | | leadership positions at Fairfield University in Connecticut |
20 | | for 15 years; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed is a student-centered leader |

1 | | committed to being an active participant in the academic, |
2 | | spiritual, and social life of Loyola University Chicago; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed serves as chair of the Council |
4 | | of Presidents for the Atlantic 10 Conference, which Loyola |
5 | | University Chicago joined in July 2022; he also serves on the |
6 | | boards of the American Council on Education, the Association |
7 | | of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and the Association of |
8 | | Jesuit Colleges and Universities; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago will celebrate its |
10 | | 153rd anniversary in September 2023; therefore, be it
|
11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
12 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
13 | | we recognize Loyola University Chicago, the only Jesuit |
14 | | Catholic University in the State of Illinois; and be it |
15 | | further

16 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
17 | | presented to the President of Loyola University Chicago, Mark |
18 | | C. Reed, Ed.D., as an expression of our esteem and respect.
